Snow Cream
A sweet end to a boring snow day
Chloe looked at the white landscape outside. The snow-covered rooftops and pine trees looked like a Christmas card scene, but today wasn’t Christmas. It was late January.
Chloe liked the snow at first. It was pretty, and it gave her time off from school. Nearly a week had passed, and now she was sick of it! It was too cold to play outside and too icy to visit her friends. There was no hill nearby to go sledding and nothing good to eat in the house! Nothing to do but sit on the couch and watch tv…
Chloe sighed, watching a cartoon she’d seen at least ten times this week. Grandma peeked in. “What’s wrong, sweetie?”
“I’m so bored!”
Grandma smiled. “Come on, get your coat on.”
Chloe started to protest, but Grandma was gone. She got up, grumbling, and put on her coat and boots. Stupid snow, she thought. Stupid, itchy coat! Grandma came back, carrying a large bowl. “What’s that for?” Chloe asked.
“We’re making snow cream. First, we need to fill this bowl with snow.”
Chloe helped Grandma search for fresh, clean snow. She found an untouched patch under the patio swing, scooping it into the bowl. When it was full, Chloe followed Grandma to the kitchen. Grandma measured out sugar, milk, and vanilla, letting Chloe add them to the snow. Chloe stirred the mixture with Grandma’s wooden spoon.
“How does it taste?”
Chloe licked the spoon, grinning. “Yummy!”
