Part two Allan’s perspective
Charlie is such a dork. He sometimes treats me like I’m made of glass and other times he tumbles me around like I’m some kind of, I don’t know, sumo wrestler.
I’d do anything for Charlie. I’d wipe his snotty nose if he’s sick, no hesitation. If he had a hangnail, I’d carefully remove it. Throw up? I’ll get the industrial cleaning kit I made just for these situations.
I’ll make sure he doesn’t kill himself by drinking alcohol to excess. He’s doing so much better now. He can just have one drink and then stop. I’m so proud of him. I love fixing his hat, his clothes, buttons, anytime, anywhere. It’s how I feel about him.
For me, it’s the little things Charlie does that make me feel good. Like, special.
One time I was so stressed out, with a head cold. I wanted to organize our file cabinet and recount how much office supplies we had in our home office.
“We have 36 paper clips, babe. And 98 sheets of computer paper. And, I’m, almost done with the pens…” Charlie looked red in the face.
“We had 108 sheets of computer paper three days ago,” I coughed. He went over and felt my forehead.
“Oh babe, you have a fever. And, well, the reason we have 98 pieces of paper now is cause I had to print out some cool band pics,” Charlie frowned. “You need some chicken soup for your soul. I’ll get you some and medicine. Please don’t go recount everything, babe.” He leaned down and kissed my cheek tenderly.
“Okay, Charlie,” I sniffle.
Charlie got his wallet, turning with a deadly seriousness. “Dude, don’t even think of getting up to clean or organize anything. I’ll be so pissed. You need rest. I’ll be home soon.”
He didn’t see it but as he left, I was grinning like a loon. He made me feel so good. So warm. Well? That might’ve been my fever but still.
So, I have had some serious bad luck with dating before Charlie. I never really got invested in anyone and if I did, it was because it was my landlord in disguise as a beautiful woman. That shit kinda stung. So I did a lot of stupid one night stands.
Now with Charlie, I feel something that I never thought I would need: safety. Warmth. Care. Tenderness.
I never thought caring for someone would make me feel so happy. But with Charlie, we take care of each other. No wonder Charlie became a Smiling Friend. He acts so stoic, so calm and chill. Like one of those cool dudes that never show emotion. But damn, Charlie feels things deeper than I thought possible.
It’s Christmas Day. Almost a year of Charlie and I dating seriously. I never used to celebrate this holiday. Glep and I used to hang out every Christmas Eve and do karaoke. But usually I’d be alone, despite visiting my father for a few hours every Christmas.
“But this is our first Christmas together,” Charlie says to me, as he helps me skin potatoes. “We gotta start making traditions together.”
“Like what, listening to the debut album of DJ Spitz?” I say, and he laughs.
I look at him seriously.
“Oh shit. Really! Did he actually get a record deal?” Charlie seems genuinely happy for the guy. It made me smile.
“Aww, you are so caring. Like seriously Charlie I really…” I put down my knife as I cut up onions, sniffling. “I’m so proud of you.”
Charlie heard me tearing up and wiped his hands on a towel, going over to me, holding me close. Whenever he randomly comes over to hold me, it’s like, being a fresh newly made hard candy being wrapped up in a new pretty wrapper, with a bow.
“You.. you’re proud of me?” He whispered, holding me pressed close to his body.
“Oh yes-uh, Charlie. I love how you make others feel better about themselves. You make me smile when you make others smile.”
He grins, kissing my face. “Even DJ Spitz?”
I laughed. “Well, he is certainly insane. But hey, he got a contract.”
“What’s the first track? Get out of mi head?” Charlie laughed.
“No, it’s, Blow Smoke, or something… I don’t really get into that rap scene, often anyway,” I explain.
“I like rap. And death metal. And rock. Oldies, even. I don’t care as long as I like it,” Charlie said, kissing me softly on the mouth.
We embraced longer without words.
It was almost dinner time. We had made dinner together just like I requested. Katrina and Pim would be here later to have drinks and dessert.
We finished preparing the sides, while Charlie randomly puts on music loudly on his iPhone speakers. He starts dramatically lip syncing to the music, making me laugh while I finish cooking. He dances with me, well, not really dancing but awkwardly shuffling around his feet and dipping me, kissing me, holding me.
“This can be one of our traditional things, dancing while we cook…” Charlie said as he dipped me again. I grinned, then I nuzzled our noses.
“You mean you dance with me while I cook?” I teased.
“Yes sir, my good lady…” Charlie said gallantly. I blushed as he kissed my neck.
“I can be your lady, Charlie…” I said softly.
“I don’t care, baby, as long as you’re mine,” Charlie pressed our face together.
I kissed him with tongue, my heart pumping high and loud and so deeply alive. God, he made me feel like a rainbow dipped in happy gas.
“You make me feel like a rainbow dipped in laughing gas…” I whispered to him. His eyes widened, brow raised, but he grinned lopsidedly.
“What the hell, Allan?” He laughed, “You must be on some weird shit to say that.”
I shook my head. “Nope. High on your love, maybe.”
Charlie nodded. “I’ll take that.” He looked over at the oven, “And that damn turkey too. I’m starving!”
Allan laughed. “Yes my heart.”
