True Silvered Bird

There was nothing particularly interesting about Hues’ life and yet the day everything changed for him he ceased to be the same person ever again. No one could or would ever call him dull upon describing him from that day forward. Hues never minded much what people thought and yet, as he escorted the lovely beauty next to him he wondered if the other townsfolk thought him too insignificant to hold this maiden’s attention. As if feeling his thoughts she slid her gaze towards Hues, silver eyes met his and he was lost in their ethereal depths. She gave a small smile, a slight turn upwards with her lips. Hues couldn’t help but return her smile and he felt reassured.

“A fairer maiden never existed.” a small child of the age of maybe eight whispered and many of the townsfolk nodded their heads in agreement. His anger spiked and he couldn’t help but shove the little snobbish child as they passed her. “ Fair is she?” Hues snarls down upon the youth. The silver eyed maiden sadly looked upon the child and bent rather gracefully to pick the little one up. After a moment the mother of the child grabs the girl rather roughly and hauls her away without so much as a backward glance in the direction of Hues and his companion.

The maiden looks so sadly at Hues almost pitifully. Hues can't stand to see that look and promptly avoids her eyes. His chest feels so tight and grief sangs and weighs heavily on his shoulders. They sweep downwards in a slumped motion as they unspeaking continue on their journey. The men and women continue to gather on the edge of their path, all watching stone faced. Hues’ trepidation only grows as the duo nears their destination. Hues glances towards his silver eyed lover once again and sucks in his breath as the suns dying rays catch her violet hair, setting it gleaming. Soon much too soon that hair will crumple and join the ground.

Hues never much cared to fight for anything in his short life and never cared to either. He had nothing in his miserable life worth fighting for. Perhaps now was a good time to start, Hues reflected on the possible consequences of such an idea. The great stone neared the disheartened duo and the crowd that steadily gathered started a shifting amongst themselves. “Ye witch, foul muck of the earth shall die and be gone, never to be seen.” Hues whipped around looking for the speaker to do what, he knew not just yet. After a bit two farmers Hues knew well enough, parted to let the town whore through. She no doubt felt threatened by the silver of hair beauty standing ever so still beside him.

The fair woman beside him just continued on towards the rock of his ancestors and climbed the steps towards the center of the granite rock. Once there she calmly looked to the town leader, John, another Hues knew well, for instructions. Hues never allowed himself to sound so pitiful, but couldn’t find it in himself to care as he said, “Please John, you know me and I'm telling you she is here in peace. If she wanted us dead we would be already.” John just nodded to Lorly and Levi to restrain the pleading man. Once Hues was secure under their muscle he kneels down on the ground next to Hues and says, “The fact that she poses the danger to kill us all, is the precise reason she must be killed.”

Hues strained his neck to look up at John as best he can, such hate filled eyes glare upwards. “Please don't do this she won't fight you, we could leave that's always an option. Please just let us leave.” John pauses and appears to be contemplating the idea and seems to hesitate, until his woman steps forward very much pregnant and says her husband’s name. John’s face clears of any doubt instantly as if it had never existed. He stands up and Hues knows the mans answer. Hues screams out, “ I knew you John we grew up on the Mcullys together and the man I knew, the townsfolk I know, wouldn’t commit cold blooded murder. Please for your souls reconsider this blasphemy!” A few of the softer hearted folk cast their gazes down in shame, but refuse to speak out. After aimlessly and hopelessly searching amid the crowd and seeing none who would speak in favor of his lady, his body sinks, heavy with defeat.

He closes his eyes as she the lady who could have saved the entire town, but instead it will be doomed due to the people’s terror of her, steps forward and kneels before the block. Without a word she drops her royal neck to the block. She waits patiently for the ax and when it fails, an eruption of silver winged birds flap viciously away from the earth and all its evils.
