She Showed Me Thalassonorous
Thalassonorous: the sound of the ocean that can only be heard when one is in a state of mindful presence.
I've always loved the sea. Mama says it's because she named me Mariana. It was my destiny. "'Mar' means 'sea', you see, and the rest is history", she'd say. I suppose she was right. From the first clumsy flaps in floaties to my great strides in salt water, my journey with the ocean was a labor of love.
The waves could be a harsh mistress, but they were a reminder that Mother Nature was the kind of Mother you would really need in life. She was the kind that, if you tripped and fell, or slipped in the sands, would wait patiently for you to cry, dust yourself off, and try again. She was to be respected, but not feared.
She was reliable. She could call in the moon and quiet the tumult, or bring on a malestrom that would suck in even the most skilled of sailors. She was the home of the sirens, those misunderstood creatures, who lured men not to their death, but to their rebirth.
She showed me thalassonorous, the deep calm found in her underbelly. But like a cat showing you its stomach, you would have to approach with caution. If you came to her depths with reverence, you would be rewarded with the tranquility that can only be found in the sounds of the sea.
