Shattered Glass

When love breaks you, and friendship cuts deeper.

By Jennifer Chinoye Published 2 years ago • 2 min read

Jade had always believed in fairytales—the kind where love conquers all and best friends are forever. She was the type of girl who gave her heart with no hesitation, who saw the best in people even when they didn’t deserve it. When she met Chris, it felt like the universe had finally smiled at her. He was charming, funny, gentle with her heart in a way that made her believe she was safe. He wasn’t just her boyfriend—he was her home.

And then there was Amara—her best friend since childhood. They were inseparable, more like sisters than friends. Jade trusted her with everything: her secrets, her dreams, her fears… even Chris. The three of them were always together, laughing late into the night, sharing meals, memories, and moments Jade thought would last forever.

But everything changed on a rainy Thursday night.

Jade had left her phone at Amara’s house after a study session. When she returned to get it, the door was unlocked. She stepped inside quietly, not wanting to wake anyone. What she saw shattered something inside her that would never quite heal.

There they were—Chris and Amara—entwined on the couch. Her heart stopped. Her breath caught. Time slowed down just enough for her to feel every ounce of betrayal crash over her like a wave of ice.

At first, neither of them noticed her. She stood there frozen, her eyes wide with disbelief and tears already streaming down her face. When Chris saw her, guilt painted his face, but Amara… Amara looked away.

Jade didn’t scream. She didn’t ask why. She just turned around and walked out, her whole world collapsing behind her.

The days that followed felt like drowning. Her chest ached in ways she couldn’t put into words. She cried until she had nothing left. The silence between her and Amara screamed louder than any fight could have. Chris tried to apologize, to explain, but what could he possibly say that would undo the pain?

The hardest part wasn’t losing the guy—it was losing the girl she thought would never hurt her.

Jade eventually picked up the pieces, but she was never the same. She loved deeper now, but guarded her heart like a fortress. She smiled again, but there was a shadow behind it. The betrayal taught her that not all love is pure, and not all friendships are real.

But it also taught her strength—the kind you only find when your heart has been broken into a thousand pieces and you still choose to put them back together.

And she did.

Piece by piece.

Stronger than before.
