Shadows of Echo

In a World Lost to War, a Prisoner's Journey to Uncover the Truth

By Torsten SieglerPublished 3 years ago • 5 min read

The Earth in the year 2100, marked by the cruel shadow of the Third World War. The cities, once vibrant centers of life, lie in ruins. The streets are covered in nuclear contamination, an endless veil of destruction. North America, once the proud heart of the United States, has been completely devastated and is now uninhabitable. The victorious powers have joined forces to form the "Confederation of Earth," a seeming unity guided by the belief that humanity is the center of the universe, the only true race. However, while the Confederation dictates its rules for coexistence and procreation, the shadow of war is omnipresent. The terraforming towers we painstakingly erected struggle against the filth of war. They reach upward, striving to keep the planet habitable, at least in the parts unaffected by nuclear contamination. But the constant battle against the remnants of war is a fight against nature itself.

As an adult, I am obliged to serve five years in the military. It is a sacrifice demanded of us by the Confederation to maintain its power. The war has taught us that defending our chances of survival comes first. We must be ready to defend ourselves against any enemy, whether from within or beyond our borders. But for those who violate the rules, there is no mercy. The Confederation decides to banish them from Earth and send them to penal colonies. These colonies, bearing the name "Echo," are desolate places on the Moon and Mars. They are trapped in endless solitude, surrounded by lifeless landscapes and the icy cold of space.

Every six months, inspections are conducted in the penal colonies. Confederate officials, in their strict uniforms, comb every corner of the colonies, searching for any signs of rebellion or transgression. We are their prisoners, their toys in this ruthless game of chess. My gaze wanders over the barren and inhospitable landscape of Echo penal colony. There is no hope here, no future. The colonies are bleak and lifeless in their construction and appearance. The buildings are rundown, the streets dusty. The people here are broken souls, marked by the scars of their past. The wind howls through the ruins, carrying the sounds of decay. It is a desolate symphony of loneliness and despair. Every breath feels like inhaling the dust of the past, a silent reminder of what once was.

Darkness falls, and I find myself alone in my cell. The monotonous hum of the ventilation system is the only sound that fills my ears. The solitude is overwhelming, yet I cling to a spark of hope. Perhaps there is a way to escape this endless night and find the light of freedom.

In this grim future, humanity is trapped between the ruins of its past and hopes for a better future. The shadows of war may surround us, but I will not give up. I will fight to find my place in this world and uncover the secrets of the universe that have been withheld from us. For even in darkness, there is always a spark of hope waiting to be ignited.

The sun mercilessly beats down on the barren landscape of Echo penal colony. I am tired and exhausted as I creep through the dusty alleys of the colony, always wary of the gangs. My thoughts are filled with fear and despair as I try to find a way to escape my deceptive identity as a murderer.

The murder I witnessed on Earth was not just an act of violence but an act of joy. The government official who pulled the trigger had a disgusting smile on his face as he ended the life of an innocent man. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and unintentionally became a witness to this cruel act. The government ruthlessly took advantage of the situation and fabricated evidence to portray me as the perpetrator. They manipulated witness statements so that everyone present claimed to have seen me commit the crime. They falsified fingerprints on the weapon and presented fake surveillance videos allegedly showing me fleeing. I was an innocent victim of a ruthless conspiracy.

In my desperate escape, I tried to elude the guards. I ducked into dark shadows, crept through narrow alleyways, and leaped over walls and ditches. My heart raced with exertion as I suppressed every breath to avoid detection. It was a cat-and-mouse game where my life was at stake. Just when I thought I had evaded the guards, the inevitable happened. I stumbled over loose pavement and fell to the ground. A piercing pain shot through my body as I injured my leg. I gritted my teeth as I picked myself up and continued running, ignoring the pain. But my pursuers were relentless. They did not give up and closed in on me. Eventually, my strength was depleted, and I was surrounded by the guards. They roughly seized me and forced me to the ground. My attempt to flee had failed. I was captured in their clutches.

The extraction procedure was torture for both body and mind. I was taken to a sterile room filled with machines and monitors. Every aspect of my body and psyche was meticulously documented. Needles pierced my skin as sensors recorded my vital functions. They scanned every inch of my body, scanning my DNA, my brain, and my memories. Every step was accompanied by pain and discomfort. But the worst was yet to come.

Finally, the ID chip was implanted in me. A small device inserted into my body to forever mark me as an exile. It was a painful procedure as the chip penetrated deep into my flesh. The pain engulfed my body like a burning fire as the chip established its connection to my nervous system. When the procedure was finally over, I felt broken and depleted. The guards brought me back to my cell, where I sat exhausted on the cold floor.

As they took away my personal belongings, clothing, and mementos, I felt a part of me disappear with them. My favorite photograph that reminded me of better days, my worn-out tool that had accompanied me through many repairs—everything was taken from me. I felt naked and vulnerable in this deprived environment.

I had lost everything—my freedom, my identity, my mementos. Only a spark of hope remained within me. Deep inside, I knew I would not be broken. My will was strong, and I vowed that one day I would uncover the truth and prove my innocence.
