Shadow They Pulled Over Our Eyes
Hide the Truth, They Used the Dark They Were Supposed to Fight
Hide.
That was what they did. Not just from the cameras, not just from the crowd, but from us. From the people who trusted them most.
I saw it happen step by step. Blaze turned his back to the cheering thousands, his golden fire dimming so only those closest could see his face. Frost shifted her stance, stepping between him and the crowd like a curtain drawn shut. Singa moved forward, broad and solid, blocking the view of the alley mouth. Nightveil slipped into the shadows, not to save anyone but to make sure no one could see what came next. And Kounter raised his arms, erecting that invisible, unbreakable wall across the entrance, sealing it tight.
They didn’t hide because they were afraid. They didn’t hide because they were outnumbered. They hid because they knew what they were doing was wrong, and they did it anyway.
I pressed myself into the narrow gap between a parked van and a brick wall, my heart hammering so hard I thought they might hear it. I didn’t mean to spy. I meant to watch to see them finish the fight, to see the surrender accepted, to see mercy given. But then I heard Blaze’s voice, low and cold, cut through the hum of the city.
“Eliminate the rest. No prisoners. No witnesses.”
And then the work began hidden behind steel and shadow and an invisible wall, where no one could see, no one could film, no one could call it out.
Around me, the crowd was still cheering. “They’re securing the area!” someone called out. “Making sure it’s safe!” A woman next to me nodded, smiling, as she held up her phone to record, pointing it straight at the glowing figures out front, completely missing what was being concealed behind them. Children were lifted onto shoulders to see better. Strangers hugged each other, relieved. No one asked what lay behind that barrier. No one wondered why the strongest, most open heroes in the world suddenly needed to shut everyone out.
I stayed where I was, hidden in my own small space, terrified to move, terrified to call out, terrified even to breathe too loud. I saw Frost glance back once, just once, toward the cheering crowd, and for a second I thought I saw something flicker in her eyes. Guilt? Regret? Fear that someone had noticed? Then it was gone, and she turned back to the dark opening of the alley and stepped through.
They were hiding the worst part of themselves. The part that obeyed instead of questioning. The part that erased instead of protecting. The part that looked at people begging for mercy and saw only a problem to be removed.
They thought they were hiding it well. They thought the noise would cover it. They thought the barrier would block it. They thought the bright, shining version of themselves they showed the world was enough to make sure no one looked too closely at the dark spaces behind.
But I saw.
I saw because I was too small to be noticed. Because I was standing where no one else stood. Because I had been watching them my whole life, not just the bright parts, but the quiet edges too, and I knew when something was being kept from me.
Later, when they walked back out into the light, they were smiling again. Blaze waved. Frost placed a gentle hand on a child’s head. Singa nodded at the crowd. Nightveil was already gone. Kounter lowered his arms like he had done nothing more than hold back a storm. The barrier fell, and the alley was empty, clean, silent, scrubbed of any sign that people had been there at all.
They had hidden it all so perfectly.
But some things cannot be hidden completely. They leave a space. A silence. A hollow place where something used to be. And that silence is louder than any cheer, any speech, any lie told in the bright of day.
I walked home that day, keeping my own secret. I didn’t tell anyone. I didn’t shout it from the rooftops. I was too young, too small, too afraid that no one would believe me. But I carried it with me anyway the knowledge that the people we trusted most were the ones most determined to keep us from seeing the truth.
They could hide what they did from the world. They could not hide it from themselves. And they could not hide it from me.
