Scars That Never Heal
A story about friendship and betrayal

Once, in a small village nestled between mist-covered mountains, there lived two childhood friends, Kate and Ashley . They had shared everything — their laughter, their tears, their secrets, and their dreams. They grew up side by side, weaving their lives together as if they were two strands of the same thread.
As they grew older, their paths began to diverge. Kate, ambitious and driven, wanted to escape the village and see the world. She dreamed of becoming a healer, traveling from city to city, learning new techniques, and making a name for herself. Ashley, on the other hand, found peace in the familiar simplicity of village life. She loved tending the fields and helping her mother with the animals. She never saw the appeal of traveling beyond the mountains.
Despite their differences, they remained inseparable, each supporting the other's dreams. Ashley promised Kate that no matter where life took them, she would always be there — the one constant Kate could rely on.
One fateful summer, when the sun hung heavy in the sky and the scent of wildflowers filled the air, a stranger came to the village. He was a traveler, claiming to know of rare and powerful healing herbs found deep in the forest, beyond the mountain pass. He spoke of treasures and knowledge that could make Kate’s dreams come true.
Kate's heart raced with excitement. This could be the opportunity she had been waiting for — the chance to learn, to grow, to finally leave the village behind. But there was one problem: the journey was dangerous, and the path was treacherous. The stranger had a sly smile, and while kate trusted his words, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.
Still, kate made up her mind. She would go. And so, with a heavy heart and a promise to return, kate left the village, with Ashley standing at the edge, watching her go. Ashley wished her friend well, but as Kate disappeared into the misty distance, a seed of doubt began to grow in Ashley’s mind.
Days turned into weeks, and there was no word from Kate . The village grew concerned, but Ashley refused to believe the worst. She waited, holding on to the hope that her friend would return, as promised.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, Ashley received a letter. It was from Kate , but the words seemed cold, distant. "I’ve found my calling elsewhere. There’s no room for you in my future. Don’t look for me. I’m better off alone."
Ashley’s heart shattered. She couldn’t believe it. Her best friend — the one she had known since childhood — had abandoned her, without a second thought. She had always been the one to put her own dreams aside to support Kate , and now this. Betrayal. The word echoed in her mind, and with it, a deep, gnawing ache.
In the days that followed, Ashley couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to the story. She recalled the stranger’s words, the way he had looked at Kate with that knowing smile. Was he a part of it? Did he somehow manipulate kate into leaving, convincing her that the village — and Ashley — were beneath her?
Ashley couldn’t bear to stay in the village any longer, not with the memories of Kate haunting her every corner. She set out to find her friend, to confront her, to understand why she had been abandoned. But as the days passed, and Ashley journeyed deeper into the wild forests and treacherous mountain passes, she began to understand a painful truth.
Kate had never cared about her the way Ashley had cared about her. The dreams Kate had spoken of were just that — dreams. In the end, Kate had chosen ambition over friendship. She had seen the friendship as a burden, something that held her back from achieving greatness. And Ashley had been the one left behind, cast aside in pursuit of something more.
By the time Ashley found Kate, it was too late. Kate had already changed, become someone else entirely. The girl she once knew was gone, replaced by a woman who had grown hardened by ambition and success.
Kate didn’t recognize Ashley when they met. Her eyes were distant, cold, as though the bond they once shared had never existed. She brushed past Ashley without a second glance, too focused on her own journey to care about the broken woman standing before her.
Ashley turned away, her heart heavy with the realization that the person she had trusted most had betrayed her. The mountains seemed even colder now, their shadows stretching long across the land. The world that had once felt so familiar, so full of promise, now felt empty.
And so, Ashley walked away — not just from Kate, but from the past they had once shared. She didn’t look back. In the end, it wasn’t the stranger or the journey that had caused the betrayal. It was the person she had once called her closest friend, who had chosen the world over her.
Ashley’s steps echoed in the silence, and though she was alone, for the first time, she didn’t feel lost. She had learned that sometimes, betrayal is not just a wound from the outside — it’s a poison that grows from within, leaving scars that can never truly heal.
