Resolve Beyond Limits
The drive to master strength without relying on power
“Don’t rush me, Zack,” he said, his voice flat and steady, stripped of any trace of frustration or urgency, yet carrying a weight that made it clear he would not be moved easily.
The words came out low and rough, still thickened by the exertion of hours of relentless practice, but there was no wavering in them. Kraii did not shift his stance, nor did he lift his gaze from the space ahead. His fingers remained locked around the polished wood of his staff, the only thing that seemed to hold him upright as fatigue pulled at every muscle in his body.
“I need to become powerful without using Archē,” he continued, each phrase spoken with deliberate clarity, as if he was reminding himself of the truth just as much as he was explaining it to his companion. “The best way is to train harder.”
To anyone else, it might have sounded like stubbornness and an unnecessary choice to make things far more difficult than they needed to be. Archē was the natural wellspring of energy, the ancient force that flowed through every living being, the source of speed, strength, and ability that most warriors learned to channel and wield from their earliest lessons. To reject it, to choose to fight and grow without drawing upon its power, was seen as foolish by many. It slowed progress, raised the risk of injury, and limited what one could seemingly achieve.
But Kraii had his reasons, buried deep in his past and shaped by what he had seen and endured. He knew too well how easily Archē could become a crutch, how it could mask weaknesses rather than fix them, how it could make a warrior rely on borrowed force rather than the strength built from within. If he could master his body, his reflexes, his balance, and his skill without calling upon that inner energy, then when the day came that he did choose to use it or when he faced a situation where it was sealed away or turned against him, he would still stand. He would not be helpless. He would be unbreakable at the core.
Even as he spoke, his chest rose and fell in deep, controlled breaths, forcing oxygen into muscles that burned and ached. Sweat continued to bead along his jawline and drip from the ends of his dark hair, soaking the collar of his sleeveless training shirt and turning the black fabric almost translucent in places. His lean frame, already honed to sharp definition, showed every line of strain, shoulders tensed, forearms corded, thighs trembling faintly under the loose trousers, but there was no sign of surrender.
“Using Archē is like adding fuel to a fire,” he added after a moment, his tone remaining calm but firm. “If the fire itself is small and weak, all the fuel in the world will only make it flare up and burn out fast. But if I build the fire first, make it strong, steady, and hot from the inside out, then when I finally add that fuel, nothing will be able to put it out.”
He shifted his grip just slightly, adjusting the staff in his hands until it felt like an extension of his own bones, not just a tool he held. “Right now, I am building that fire. If I stop before it is ready, if I rely on shortcuts, then whatever strength I gain will never truly be mine. I want to be powerful enough that even without Archē, I can stand against anyone, endure anything, and protect what matters. That is the only kind of power worth having.”
The air around him felt heavy with his determination, a quiet intensity radiating from his frame that made it clear this was not a passing ambition, but a promise he had made to himself. He was willing to push past exhaustion, past pain, past the limits his body thought it had all to forge a strength that could not be taken away.
