Mama said to her babies I’m running out for awhile

Do not open the door for a stranger

They will try to deceive you by wearing a smile

You won’t be able to decipher the danger

A wolf in sheep’s clothing, a reflection of love

Whatever it takes to persuade you

I’m trying to be honest and remove the kid gloves

By telling you the gods honest truth

Mama said to her babies before she locked up the door

I know you think that you cannot be fooled

But I’ve been around the block and have seen it before

It’s my job to be sure you are schooled

Mama said to her babies from outside the house

Listen closely my dears, to my voice

Please wait patiently for me, side by side on the couch

Be the best little girls and brave boys

Mama said to her babies when she called on the phone

When I return I will have a special knock

I’m always with you, you’re never alone

I’ll be back when it says 9 on the clock

Mama said to her babies in a note on the table

There is a snack I left for you on the counter

I will return just as soon as I’m able

My sweet little sons and my daughter

Mama said to her babies as she thought to herself

I know you’re fine and are waiting for me

Sometimes it’s good to spend some time by yourself

But being together makes me feel complete

Mama said to her babies as she headed back home

I’ll be back home babies, before you know it

One day soon it will be your turn to roam

And I’ll be the one at home letting you in

Mama said to her babies as she knocked out the code

One, two, three and a giggle or two

The babies opened the door wildly, “mama you’re home”

We knew by the knock it was you

Mama said to her babies I am so proud my dears

I knew that you would be fine and you were

It’s important to know how to conquer your fears

It was the best way for me to be sure

Mama said to her babies as she sat on the floor

They gathered round her and told what they had done

We waited for a moment, listening through the door

Playing games together having fun

Mama said to her babies with a smile so soft

It’s so important for me that you’re close

That one day is coming when I’ll make my last call

And you’ll have each other when needed the most

Mama said to her babies, no longer babies at all

As they nursed her and cared for her needs

Thank you for always being there when I fall

Your love is so special to me

Mama said to her babies as she was fading away

Remember I am always with you

Like when you stayed home when I went shopping that day

And you proved to me that you were good

Mama said to her babies and pointed to the wall

I may be absent but forever in your hearts

That phone will always receive my last call

So that we will never really be apart

Her babies told mama as she slowly closed her eyes

We will never forget how you loved

These last calls are precious, they aren’t forever goodbyes

We will see you again soon, up above

They put a faded gold frame on that old landline phone

A symbol true love will recall

To remind them that they are never really alone

In the off chance she might make one last call
