What happens when we die? A psychic may have the answer to that, as she claims the spirits of the dead she says she's been able to speak with all her life have answered the age-old mystery.

When Emily Dexter was just a child, she used to chat with the dead in a forest near her home as she played. They were her companions but as she got older, they started to frighten her.

Her mother began sleeping with her at night to assuage her fears, and she strived for years to suppress her abilities. She eventually embraced them, and now, the 31-year-old has turned them into a career. She works as a professional psychic in Lake Tahoe, California
But what happens to the dead after they pass? They go on a "spiritual spa day," Dexter said, where they have an emotionally healing journey that reverses the damaging effects of any difficulties they had in their lives.

"We hang out with our dead loved ones for a week or two, then head there, where we basically cope with and heal from all the difficulties we had while we were human," she said. "That period can last for a week, a year or five years. It all depends on the person and their path."

Then, she said the path we as humans were put on in life continues — and that includes popping back into the world of the living to check on loved ones, guide them or help them when they, too, pass. Or, we could move on to the next life. Yet another option is "rejoining our higher self."

"I thought everyone could see their passed relatives standing in the room with them — I thought it was normal," Dexter said of her abilities. "When I was 8, I realised that everyone couldn't do that."

She said that everyone has spirit guides floating around them, guiding them through life, helping them to achieve different life goals and guiding them through difficult decisions. Many are family members who have passed. I think of them as friends. They are all friends. You have them for a long time, and they are around to help you," she said. "They are your team of helpers that work to help your life go the way you would like it to go and achieve the things you want to achieve."

She added that "you don't necessarily see them, but you can hear them or just feel them with you." And many aren't great with boundaries, she said — they can pop up at any time, hoping to deliver a message to their living relative or loved one.

Dexter said she suppressed her abilities a lot in middle school and into her early 20s, but as she was leaving an abusive relationship around that time, she decided she wanted to embrace her powers once more.

She said she had repressed them because she didn't know how to talk about them, but now, they've become a facet of her daily life. And she's not ashamed of them.

"I have a room for them in my mind, and I have that door closed unless people ask for me to speak to them," she explained. "The way it works for me is I do see energy with my eyes, so I didn't realise this for a long time, but over everything, there is a layer of energy that I can see but other people can't
