In 1997, Pikachu emerged from a Japanese cartoon linked to a popular video game. The world fell under the spell of Pokémon, a dark phenomenon. For nearly three decades, Ash roamed the globe. He captured creatures, forcing them into brutal battles. These beings are mere puppets, controlled by his will. In both the game and the show, Pokémon evolve into stronger forms. Ash's companion, Pikachu, is a second evolution, born from the innocent Pichu. The third evolution, Raichu, looms in the shadows. Yet, Pikachu remains stagnant. Despite countless fights and the passage of time, he refuses to evolve into Raichu. There lies a sinister reason behind this choice.

In season 1, episode 14, titled "Electric Shock Showdown," Ash and Pikachu face Lieutenant Surge and his formidable Raichu. The battle is brutal. Raichu decimates Pikachu, while Surge taunts Ash for his poor choice not to evolve. A Thunderstone presents itself, offering evolution. But Pikachu refuses. He chooses to confront Surge and Raichu as he is, unyielding. In the games, certain moves vanish upon evolution. This dark twist reveals the truth: Surge hastily evolved his Pikachu, stripping it of vital skills. It ends in disaster. Raichu falls, consumed by defeat.

There’s a darker reason behind Pikachu's iconic design. Altering its appearance could dent its billion-dollar franchise status. This concerns viewership and marketability. Initially, Pikachu was meant to have a fourth evolution after Raichu. It was called Gorochu. In an interview, Coji Nishino, the character designer, revealed this. Gorochu had fangs and horns. A terrifying prospect, now lost to the shadows.

The designers had to abandon the new Pokémon design. Nishino spoke of concerns related to game balance. This implies that the creature lacked the charm needed to survive. In the end, it wasn't cute enough to make the cut. Deemed unworthy, it faded into obscurity.
