Passed Five Minutes of Glory
Magical Realism
Every night at midnight, the purple clouds came out to dance with the blushing sky. Leaving you stuck if you do not follow the rules.
Midnight. A time when a family member of a lost loved one reunites. Taking turns entering the spirit world to check in on each other, and though time is limited; five minutes is all that is needed before the clouds turn back to its usual color. Well at least for some it is.
Tonight, it is Sara's turn to see her mother. She prepares her favorite meal to bring on her way, wears a nice red dress and times her watch for five minutes. As midnight hits, she begins to fly with other loved ones eager to catch up.
She spots her mother from a distance and runs to give her a hug. They chat, laugh and even cry a little. Sara hands her mother her lasagna but little does she know that time was running out, feeling faster than expected. Five minutes was up and saying goodbye was something they both dis acknowledged. Losing track of time was easy for many. Reminiscing old times and remembering the bad can have people forget about a stop watch.
Clouds turned white and Sara was stuck in the spirit world with no way back down. Rules have been broken so leaving everything behind with no journey to call her own, seemed to be a definite.
Sara is a medical student with big dreams to work in a psychiatric institute. She suddenly became depressed knowing how quick she had to loose everything. However did she really?
Her dreams were dependent on how her mother passed. Her mother ended her own life when Sara was only eight years old due to her life long inner struggle with mental illness. Knowing this as she grew up, turned her into a mental health advocate and wanted to change the world. However, after losing everything she did not realize the potential she can have in the afterlife, until this happened.
People of all backgrounds started to come to her for moral support. Sara soon became the go to person on the other side when spirits were longing their loved ones on earth. Kids came to hug her while seniors always smiled and waved. No mater the circumstance she was placed in, she found value once again and feelings of depression went away. She also had her best friend by her side, feeling proud as ever before of her daughter.
Sara was a role model and was given a role to public speak. Her first speech reads: "Finding purpose is a process of self-discovery, in which a person discovers the meaning and purpose of their life. It is a spiritual journey, in which a person chooses to cultivate an understanding that all of life is meaningful, and that our lives have an underlying purpose. Through this journey, one can find clarity in life decisions, and a sense of fulfillment in how they choose to live. Just because your life on earth is gone, you as a whole remains. Remains in the hearts and memory of loved ones and remains here in the afterlife. You left your mark in the lives you left so do not worry about today. Afterlife is proof that you can infinitely find meaning in your presence and even until the next purple cloud appears, you are never forgotten."
Spirits began to applaud for five whole minutes, as a reminder of the day she forgot to return. Sara looks around and says "Past five minutes of glory was worth it".
