Her shepherds ears swiveled at the sound of crunching. Yanking her handgun up, she pointed it toward the sounds source.
“Don’t come any closer,” she threatened.
His wide, shocked eyes met hers as he stopped. “I’m sorry. It’s just… I haven’t seen one of you before.”
“What you haven’t seen a person before?” She bit back, gun still raised.
“No… Haven hasn’t seen any woman. Not since the Outbreak.”
Shock bubbled up. While she tried to make sense of his words in the silence, he named her fear.
“You might be the last woman on Earth.”
