Prologue

"There weren't always dragons in the valley. Well, there weren't always people living in the valley, let alone dragons.

A long time ago, on a dark quiet evening, an explorer named Sheila Frampton embarked on a solo expedition through the abandoned Valley Dralossle, which was miles from civilization..."

-.-.-.-.-.-

Sheila Frampton was an adventurous woman with a dream to discover something new. Ever since she was little, her father would tell her tales of the monsters living in the unknown. Usually, when little girls hear these types of stories, they'd be too frightened to even go to sleep. However, this intrigued Sheila as these stories are what sparked her interest in the art of exploration.

She thought about her now late father as she held onto the necklace around her neck, which had a charm that resembled a cold silver dragon. She was on a dirt bike, riding through the valley.

Okay, maybe the adventure and Sheila's endless curiosity wasn't the only reason for this journey. She had received a tip from an old friend that there was something hidden in these woods... something wicked.

"I heard that within the mountains along the Valley Dralossle there is a hidden facility that houses the craziest artifacts... like an old ancient museum!" her friend had said. Not only did Sheila want the adventure, but she could use a little extra cash, too. Not that she would ever admit that.

As she rode alongside the river, looking around for anything out of the ordinary, a sudden flash of light from afar blinded her. Blocking it with her arm, she came to a halt. However, she stopped a little too short and ended up slipping off of her bike.

Coughing from swallowing some dirt from her fall, she stood back up and wiped her clothes. She looked in the distance to see where the flash the light came from and noticed something oddly red. The valley was nothing but the river, mountains, and trees so the red was definitely worth checking out.

She got back on her bike and headed toward the odd red object, as she got nearer she recognized its shape. It was a siren.

As she drove up the incline, she noticed that the siren sat atop a yellow heavily bolted door. She wondered if the flash of light had come from an odd reflection of the light on the siren or if there was something else she was missing.

Good thing an explorer always coincidentally has the right gear to get through any inconvenience. So, she pulled out her drill and started undoing all of the bolts that locked the door. Then, with an explosive device she had brought, she planted it on the crevice between the door and the earth. She detonated it and ran away. The ground rumbled as the explosive went off and followed by a large thud that could be heard across the whole valley caused by the door falling from its post.

An explosive-proof door, but not explosive-proof nature. Sheila stepped through the opening with her flashlight in hand.

Alright... where are those artifacts... she thought as she felt a lump rising in her throat. She wasn't necessarily a fan of dark and spooky hidden cave-like facilities. Who is? Especially when she heard a weird low growl come from the direction she was going.

She sighed and wondered if she should turn back, or if she was even in the same spot her friend had mentioned to her. She followed the sound anyway, as it seemed she was walking down the longest hallway with no doors of all time.

As she shone the light ahead, it seemed she was finally going to reach the end. There was a bright yellow door, and as she got closer she could read the writing on it.

"Danger. Wear proper protective gear," the sign read. She confidently scoffed and then contradictorily gulped. She took a deep breath, as she let her curious spirit take over. She took a deep breath and opened the door. And what she found inside was breathtaking.

It was a cavern, the walls lined with bright crystals of all different colors. There was a light cold mist, and along the ground were rows of large lavender-colored eggs. Because the door was open, the mist was escaping the room. Sheila looked in awe at the fantastical sight in front of her.

As she neared the center of the room, she heard a crack. She looked to her left and saw an egg was cracking. Then, another. Suddenly, all of the eggs were shaking and cracking.

It took all of Sheila's energy not to scream in fear as she bolted out the door, forgetting to close it behind her. She was outside in the sunlight by the time she realized this. The siren above the door began going off and Sheila ran to hide behind a nearby large rock, where she was covered but could still see what was happening.

A large swarm of multicolored creatures flew out of the door and filled the sky. Sheila's heart was pounding throughout her body as she was witnessing what she had done. The animals appeared to be baby dragons.

The ground beneath Sheila began to shake violently and she felt on her back. The tree next to her fell, and she was thankful that it didn't land on top of her. It felt as if the ground exploded as a roaring sound consumed the air.

I guess that must be the mother, Sheila thought to herself.

Sheila rose from her laying position and took a peek from behind the rock at the large, beautiful lavender-colored dragon that stood before her. Surrounding it were hundreds of baby dragons.

Sheila could feel the dragon's eyes meet hers and she gasped. The dragon's eyes glowed a bright purple and Sheila felt her body being lifted off the ground.

It was at this moment that Sheila felt like she did the wrong thing. Suddenly, she regretted becoming an explorer. She feared for the worst: that this dragon was going to kill her in the most painful way possible.

Although, dying from a telekinetic dragon wasn't such a bad way to go. Alas, the dragon held Sheila in front of her body and, with a welcoming look, heard a faint light voice say "thank you" as if the dragon was speaking to her. Sheila sighed in relief and gave the dragon a sympathetic look.

"You're welcome," she said back.

After that, Sheila began a new civilization in Valley Dralossle where dragons and humans would live in harmony. She never was able to solve the mystery of the bright flash of light or why the dragons were in that clearly manmade facility in the first place.

-.-.-.-.-.-

"But kids... Sheila is the reason for our prosperous life with the resources of two species at our disposal. Our harmony with the dragons is why we have grown so quickly as a society. Although we didn't originate from a crazy war or a series of wacky trials, this story of our past is the most important of them all. If it wasn't for Sheila's courageous and curious spirit, we would have never united with the dragons."

One of my students raised their hands with a question.

"Yes, Brenlyn?" I said.

"Is Sheila still alive?" she asked.

"Yes, yes we believe she is... but nobody has seen her or the mother dragon for the last 2 decades."
