One of the Chosen Few

A (too late) submission for the "New Worlds" challenge

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. However, that's not entirely true. There are those who do hear the screams of those who are lost in the vast emptiness that is space. Beings who take pity on these lost souls and give them a second chance of life. A chance to be something more than ordinary. A chance to have astronomical power. A chance to be...chosen.

'Can you hear me?'

The man slowly opens his eyes, only to see nothing but space staring back at him. Or to be more specific, it was a woman made of space. Her gigantic body and long hair were nothing but a silhouette of space and stars all in the shape of a voluptuous body. The more he looked the more mesmerized he felt. It was as though he was looking into the universe itself. The man tried to speak, only to feel a sharp pain in his throat and have no sound escape his mouth.

'Can you hear me?' the woman asked again.

The man could only nod as he held his neck, not wanting to feel that pain again. The woman's eyes that resembled galaxies gazed down at the man she carried in the palm of her hand. Such a small and fragile being. One that she could have easily ignored like many others before him. She had heard his screams, his soul, calling out in the deafening silence. Nothing she hadn't heard before, just the same 'I don't want to die', 'Please someone...something. Help me'. The only reason why she had decided to listen to his screams was because he had what few others had.

Hope. Many souls had cried for help with no belief of something actually saving them, not that she blamed them. Hearing his cries for help didn't garner much attention, not until she sensed the hope he had. It wasn't much, but it was there, alongside his fear and desperation. There was another thing she felt though, something that puzzled her. Rage. Unbeknownst to him, deep down in his soul was a fire burning with rage waiting to be released. Why he had such rage inside him wasn't known to her, nor did she desire to know, all that mattered right now was that he knows what his new path is.

'Listen to me well. You, young soul, are lost. No name, no memories, and no direction. I am here to give you those and more. My name is Ursa, and I will be sending you to a planet named, Grizzlim. You will be safe here as it is in a domain that I rule over, and there will be many others there to help you become accustomed to your new life. They will be your new family and will inform you of your new path in this life. You will be welcomed with open arms as long as you try your best to accomplish our mission. In time, if you do well, I will bestow upon you powers that you have only dreamed of. However, do not grow arrogant from all this. What you are being given is a gift, a gift that can be taken away just as easily as I am giving it to you. If I or the others believe you are not fit for our mission, then I will take my gift back from you. If you purposely try to halt or hinder our mission, I will personally make sure you regret your actions, as I slowly and painfully tear your soul apart atom by atom.'

The man was frightened as he stared into her galactic eyes that turned red at the threat. 'New life? New Path? Powers? What does she mean?' he thinks to himself. He tries hard to remember how he even got to this point, conversing with a woman made of space, but all he gets in return is a sharp pain in the back of his head. He flinches and grabs his head, fully realizing that the woman was right. His mind was basically empty, he had no memories of how he got here. He didn't know his own name, hell he couldn't think of a single name other than Ursa. What had happened to him? Was he kidnapped by some kind of all-powerful being? Or was he possibly...dead? These questions and many more plagued his mind as he listened to Ursa's speech. He desperately wanted to voice his confusion and ask a thousand questions but knew that only pain and failure would be the outcome for trying to.

This will not be an easy journey, and there will be moments where you will be tested and pushed to your limits. Now is the time to decline my offer if you are prepared to handle these things, if you want to decline then you are free to walk off my hand.'

For a moment, the man looked over the edge of Ursa's palm, only to see absolutely nothing. He still didn't fully know what was going on, and a part of him thought it would be better if he just walked off her hand and fell into the unending darkness. That wouldn't answer any of the questions he had though. So, he mustered up all the courage he had in this moment and stood in front of Ursa with a look of determination.

'Very well. I'm sure you have many questions, but I do not have the time to explain it all to you. When you get to Grizzlim, find Boötes, and have him explain everything to you. Be grateful and rejoice. As you are now one of the few chosen to receive such a blessing! I'm sure you will do us all proud, and have us remember your name, Canes!'

Canes barely had any time to register what she had just told him before he was being carried closer to Ursa's body. She was putting her hand including him into her body where a stomach would normally be. As Canes felt himself be submerged into the cold and oddly soft body, he wondered to himself. 'What am I getting myself into?'. As he was being pushed further into Ursa, he saw many planets and stars soar by him at incredible speeds. They soared faster and faster, Canes was suddenly hit with a sense of dizziness and nausea. He soon closed his eyes and felt himself slip into unconsciousness. If he had stayed awake a little longer, he would've seen the bright orange and purple planet he was being brought to.
