He was the love of her life. She knew it immediately.
His childish humor in private was offset by his imposing presence in public. He was always scanning for threats as they walked arm in arm; he guarded their home like a castle. Every night he “secured the perimeter” before meeting her in bed. She thought of him as her Scarecrow.
One day fate stole him.
They played taps and presented her with a token of “our nation’s gratitude.”
The crows stood watch in silence.
She kissed him goodbye, for now.
