No Good Deed
Nice Guys Finishes Last

Oscar Love lived in the Greenwood Apartments for most of his adult life. It wasn’t the best, but it was a roof over his head. He was able to stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. What more could a man ask for. He spent several years sleeping on cots in homeless shelters when he could, but often, he slept on the ground. As bad as Greenwood was, it was a step up.
He worked for Duey Foster and Hope. It was a financial planning firm that very few people knew about and even fewer people trusted. It didn’t pay much, but it paid the bills. What more could a man ask for.
Every day, Oscar left work at 5:30 PM. He would often go to the store or a fast food restaurant to pick up something for dinner. He’d arrive home by 6:15, open his door and throw his coat on the couch. Then he would cook his dinner or grab a plate if it was fast food, and sit down to watch TV. Normally it would be some cooking program. He loved to cook, although it was rare that anyone would visit him and he could show off his skills. Sometimes, on the weekends, he would travel to his relatives with some of his culinary creations. But on this night, it was simply burgers and fries.
Oliver finished his dinner and sat back in his chair and allowed the TV to watch him. As he did every night, he started to stare out the window. Most nights were uneventful. Sometimes he’d see an unsavory looking young man standing at the corner, waiting Then a black car with dark windows and no headlights would pull up, he’d get in and they’d drive away to return 30 minutes later.
Today was not much different. He looked and saw the same unsavory man, but a white car pulled up. This was an Aston Martin. Not often seen in this neighborhood. Never seen, until now. The window rolled down and conversation started. The unsavory man pulled out a gun. Oscar crack opened his window trying to hear what was being said. He demanded that the driver get out of the car. He then used force to reach into the car, unlock the door, and pull the driver out. He then hit her in the head and drove away. He couldn’t tell, but it looked as if he ran her over in the process. Oscar immediately called 911 and went to check if the driver was OK.
It was a woman, tall, dark skin, long red hair. She was about 55 years old and beautiful. She was unconscious but still breathing. Oscar shook her to revive her and helped her off the ground. She stammered up and he helped her into his apartment.
“You’ll be safe in here while the police come,” he said. “My name is Oscar, What’s yours?”
She identified herself as Amy Westbrook. She was grateful for her rescuer and offered him a $500 reward. Despite the fact that he was strapped for cash with unpaid bills, he turned it down. He said that he only did what he was supposed to do.
Amy had made a wrong turn about half a mile down the road. She had stopped to ask for directions when she say someone standing there. She was a trusting lady always giving people the benefit of the doubt. Oscar could only pray that this experience did not ruin that in her.
The police did eventually come. Since Oscar was the only eyewitnesses, they had a lot of questions for him. He was able to identify the carjacker. He was Thomas Wagner. They went to high school together. Thomas was the model student until the wrong crowd go him into drugs. Now he stands at dark corners waiting to see what job he can get to pay for his addiction. A new Aston Martin could fetch him a pretty penny. $250,000 at least. It was a shame what path he took in life.
Amy’s injuries were more sever than a bump on the head. It seemed as if she was hit by the car stolen from her. She was taken to the hospital and Oscar rode in the ambulance with her. Concerned with her wellbeing, he stayed by her side the whole time. When her family arrived, he prepared to leave.
“Thank you,” Johnny, her son said. “You saved our mother. You’ve done our family a great service.”
Johnny offered Oscar a $1,000 reward. But he refused.
The next day, Oscar came to visit Amy in the hospital. He continued to visit her whenever he had a chance. He would visit her more than her own family. They became close friends. But her health continued to diminish.
Eventually, Amy died from her injuries. Oscar mourned over her death as if it was his own mother who had died. Her own children did not even come to visit that day. They came the following day. Oscar came to give his condolence to the family. They mustered up some tears for a display of compassion and emotion, but it wasn’t sincere.
Oscan never accused Amy’s children of being insincere or unloving to their mother. But they did seem kind of cold. Their mother just died. One would think they’d be completely out of their minds. Oscar went back to his life that he knew, not wanting anything to do with these people. He thought about Amy every day. But he did not interfere with the life of her family. He had no dealings with them until there was a knock at his door. A lawyer from the Office of Eddy Smith hand delivered a subpoena to appear before a judge.

There was more to it than that. But that was the important part. Oscar was mentioned in Amy’s will. He was happy but didn’t think he deserved anything.
Oscar walked into the court room and Mike Westbrook, Amy’s youngest, turned and looked at him.
“Who’s that,” he asked?

Amy Westbrook
Oscar’s life changed dramatically. He went from carefully watching every penny to money not mattering overnight. He immediately moved out of the Greenwood Apartments. He started donating to the same homeless shelters that took him in. He used money to help lift others out of the state he was in. He was spending money left and right, yet barely a penny on himself.
He even purchased and remodeled an old lighthouse and converted it to a Bed and Breakfast. He moved into it and used the rooms to help the homeless. He quit his dead-end job and used his time to help others. He befriended so many people in such a short time that he was declared the honorary mayor of the town.
In all, Oscar spent over $300 Million on helping others. This “waste” of money did not sit well with Amy’s children. They decided to press charges, claiming that Oscar took advantage of Amy just to get his name on the will. Why would anyone help out a stranger? They claimed that he saw the car Amy was driving, possibly called Thomas Wagner to set up the carjacking, and then moved in knowing that she was rich. They demanded that he return everything he received in the will.
The trial was long. In Oscars eyes, the defense had no proof of any wrongdoing on his part. However, the court ruled in favor of the family. Oscar was not required to get back everything he had already donated, but everything left, he was forced to return. He also had to give up the lighthouse.
Oscar ended up back in the Greenwood Apartments. He got another dead-end job, working all day. Every day, Oscar left work at 5:30 PM. He would often go to the store or a fast food restaurant to pick up something for dinner. He’d arrive home by 6:15, open his door and throw his coat on the couch.
One night, he’s looking out window, and saw a woman being mugged. He went to help her. He called 911 and helped the lady into his apartment.
