New Year's Part two
A woman’s lover had been emotionally cheating on her, however her neighbor has always been in love with her.
The second their order was called she head on over. Her mind went blank. Palms sweaty as she forced a smile on her face. She watched Yahir pause mid laugh. A noise she hasn’t heard in what felt like months.
“Elena.” He said.
“Yahir.” She said.
“What are you doing here?” He asked.
“I could ask you the same?”
Elena glanced at the woman.
“So. This the friend?”
“She’s-”
“His fiancé'.”
Elena blinked.
“Of four years.”
She tilted her head.
“four years?”
She crossed her arms.
“Really?” She grits out staring at Yahir.
He takes a sip of water.
“That’s funny.”
“Who’s she?” The woman asked.
“My friend.” Yahir said quickly.
Looking away from Elena.
Her heart beating so hard her throat began to hurt.
“His ex-girlfriend.” Elena said clearly.
Elena grabbed his tropical drink and dashed it in his face.
“And have a lovely new year.” She beamed.
Elena walked out, her eyes stinging and her ears ringing from the shame and stares around her. Heading down the street, rain began to pour just as it did earlier.
I should’ve known.
Her choked sobs slipped through, wiping her tears with her sleeves.
“Elena…”
She froze at the sound.
Looking back.
“What do you want?”
“I’m sorry.”
“You’re not sorry.”
“I…listen, my father had set me up with her and…we fake dated for so long that I just never bothered to consider it a real thing. Not until after I got with you.”
“You said you’ve never dated anyone before me.”
“And I did not lie. I cared for you like I’ve done for nobody else.”
“But you care for her now right?”
Yahir sighed. Rain droplets falling from his black hair strands as he nodded.
“So I was the side chick.”
“No- Hell no. I didn’t actually talk to her until half a year ago.”
“And you couldn’t tell me?” Elena choked out. “That you’ve fallen out of love with me and in love with her?”
Yahir took a step closer as Elena took a step back.
“I’ve never done anything physical with her. Just conversations. I know how it sounds but I never meant to hurt you.”
“But you did.”
Yahir bit his lip at her pained expression.
“You lied to me.”
“I had no choice.”
“You always had a choice. It’s just that I was never your choice.”
Elena stormed off, Yahir standing alone in the rain.
“It was either you or my inheritance.” He mumbled. Ruffling his own wet hair.
“Guess I chose my inheritance a long time ago.” He says to himself.
He turned to head back into the cafe, a motorcycle driving by a puddle had splashed on him. Completely soaking him in brown rain water.
“What the-”
The man flipped him off without looking back.
“Bastard.” He spits out, heading back in.
Meanwhile Elena had marched right up to a park. It was still open. After all it’s going to have one of the best firework views.
She heard a bike rumbling behind her.
“Elena!” Zane called out. She looked back, a mix of tears and rain water on her cheeks. His hand lingered by her cheek before taking her hand.
“C’mere.” He said lowly.
He took her to a gazebo. Far into the park. Even with the dimly lit shelter she still had a damped mood.
“He’s been cheating on me.” She whispered.
“Mhm.”
“It was obvious wasn’t it?”
“Mhm.”
Zane draped his jacket over hers. He gently stroked a falling tear off her cheek.
“You deserve better.”
“Do I?”
“Surely I must have done something for him to fall out of love with me.”
“You did nothing. I see you all the time. You’re a ray of sunshine, anyone would be lucky to have you in their life.”
“Anyone?” She whispered
Her eyes lock onto his from that. Ears reddening at the sound of that.
“I’d cherish you, Elena.”
He watched her lips form into a smile.
The rain seemed to have let up, and as the cold air hit them. Elena couldn’t help but feel some sort of relief.
“Didn’t think my new year would start off like this.”
Her lip tugged against her lip as the countdown dropped.
“Well I’m glad I’m spending mine with you.”
Zane takes her face between her hands.
“I mean it when I said that. I want to be the one loving you, Elena.”
She placed her hands on his, eyes twinkling with hope.
Those were the words I’ve been wanting to hear all this time.
“Can I?” He whispered.
Brushing his thumb against her lower lip.
The sky lit up with a 3-2-1 countdown.
“Mhm.” She hummed.
As his lips met hers, all they could hear were the exploding sounds of fireworks and their beating hearts.
“Happy new year.” He whispered against her lips.
“Happy new year.”
