Candy slowly walked down the hallway of her new school's main building. She mostly looked at the floor as she made her way to what would be her classroom for fifth grade. She was filled with a mix emotion. All the emotions that she was feeling at the time were of a negative nature. Anger, anxiety, fear, and sadness all filled up her head and her heart. Normally when returning to school, Candy was sad to see summer end but was happy to be back with her friends and to play on the playground at Pine Lane Elementary. However, this year she was not at Pine Lane. She was in a completely new school with new people and new playground. The area where Candy lives had become more and more populated in recent years. The local schools could no longer accommodate all the children who now lived in the district. It was decided that new schools and new districts would be built so that children in the city could be accommodated. Candy's new school was called Flower Garden Elementary, and it was not where she wanted to be. Candy lives a short walk from the new school however her two best friends Daisy and Mindy still live in Pine Lane's district. Originally Candy was told that she would get to complete her last year of elementary school at Pine Lane. However, the construction of flower garden elementary had been completed sooner than expected. All summer the school districts debated to decide if the fifth-grade students should be moved to Flower Garden now or wait until middle school to change districts. Candy had been at Pine Lane since kindergarten, and she wanted more than anything to graduate from there. During the summer Candy didn't think about the ongoing debates that much. She was too busy enjoying her summer. She had a fun summer full of adventure, so it was easy not to think about school. She had gone to Disneyland, spent a week at summer camp, visited her uncle and spent a lot of time hanging out with Daisy and Mindy. However even all that fun couldn't keep her mind off school once the news was broke to her two weeks before school started. Apparently, adults were a lot slower at making decisions then Candy had thought they would be. She had assumed that the silence meant she'd be returning to Pine Lane for her last year of elementary school. Candy had spent the last two weeks of summer vacation alternating between crying and being angry. She told her parents that she was going to sneak on the bus to Pine Lane instead of walking to Flower Garden. Candy was not usually known as a troublemaker. However, she had not been herself for the past two week so her mom thought it would be best if she drove her to the new school and made sure that Candy went inside. When Candy reached her new classroom, she found the desk with her name on it. she immediately sat down and put her head down on her desk so that she would not have to look at anyone. About five minutes later the bell rang and the teacher introduced himself to the class. Mr. Morgan was her new teacher. Candy only picked her head up off the desk to look straight forward because she was afraid if she didn’t, she would draw attention to herself. After Mr. Morgan introduced himself, he wanted the class to do the same. He had sent an email out to all the parents and students asking everyone to bring three pictures from their summer to share with the class. He began calling on the students by where they were sitting. Candy reached for the purple folder in her backpack. She knew she would be the third student to share her pictures and she just wanted to get it over with. Her first picture was of her family in front of the castle at Disneyland, her second picture was of her and her sister holding up some of the art projects that they had made at summer camp and her third picture was of a Bull that she had seen when she was on a walk by her uncle’s house. She had really liked the bull. She had named him popcorn after her favorite food. The next student to share her pictures was a girl named Lara. Her first picture was of a bull named Jelly. He lived at the farm animal rescue where her father worked. She talked all about him and how friendly he was. Suddenly candy’s negative emotions seemed to disappear. She wished that she could met Jelly and take a picture of him too. As soon as Lara sat back down at her desk she made eye contact with Candy and they both smiled. Lara quickly drew something on a sticky note and passed it to Candy it was a picture of a bull. Candy Smiled her biggest smile at Lara. She could tell that this was the beginning of a great friendship.
