My Dearest Friend

This short story is devoted to my best friend, Chloe.

By Caleb LahrPublished 2 years ago • 1 min read

The sun slipped beneath the horizon, a final blaze of orange fading to violet dusk. In the darkening room, two hands clasped, translucent skin stretched over fragile bones.

Chloe gazed at Caleb, his breaths shallow and labored. The ache of a lifetime of love and memories welled in her chest.

"My dearest friend," she whispered, "It's almost time, isn't it?"

Caleb's eyes fluttered open, brown and weary, but still shining with affection. "I believe so. We had... the best of times, didn't we?"

A faint smile crossed Chloe's face. "The very best. I wouldn't trade a single day."

She thought of the years stretching behind them - the laughter, the tears, the joys and sorrows all tangled together in the inextricable embroidery of their bond. Two lives entwined, a friendship that time could never erode.

Caleb squeezed her hand weakly. "Thank you for everything. For being by my side, all these long years."

A single tear traced down Chloe's lined cheek. "Thank you for filling my life with warmth and light.”

Silence descended, broken only by the whisper of their breaths - one set growing fainter, approaching that unknowable boundary.

With trembling arms, Chloe pushed herself up, ignoring the protests of her ancient joints. Tenderly, reverently, she pressed her lips to Caleb's brow in a final benediction.

"Wait for me," she breathed. "I'll be along soon."

Caleb smiled, his eyes already seeing distant shores. "I know you will. I'll be waiting."

With a sigh, his eyes drifted shut. Chloe laid her head on his still chest, tears flowing freely now.

"Goodnight, my sweet friend," she murmured. "May flights of angels sing you to your rest."

Outside the window, the first stars winked to life - shining gods standing watch over that unbreakable bond, love's last light against the impinging dark.
