Microfiction Challenge
There’s a noise under the bed. Ignore it. It’s all in my head.
There’s a noise in the closet. Ignore it. There’s nothing there.
There’s a noise at the bedroom door. Knocking? Maybe it’s my brother.
I should check. What if it’s an emergency?
I pull aside my blankets and swing my feet out of the bed, planting them firmly on the floor.
The knocking stops. Maybe it was never there. It’s all in my head.
I try to remind myself of that as something grabs both of my ankles and pulls me into the darkness under my bed.

Soul Searching
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Jacob had driven past the place hundreds of times, but not once had he ever seen a light, or any other sign of life, come from within the old shack. If it wasn’t so far off the paved road, he might have gone to check it out, but hiking through the woods in the dark wasn’t something he was in a hurry to do. It really wasn’t his concern, whatever was going on in the cabin, but he didn’t want a bunch of kids to burn the place down either. After all, his own home wasn’t too far away, and fires could spread quickly. Maybe he’d check it out in the daylight, he told himself, but by the time Jacob arrived at his house, all thoughts of the cabin had disappeared.

The Finish Line
It was going to be a photo finish. 60 seconds to go. Dan Johnson and Dave O'Brien turned on the last leg of the race at the exact same time. They have been side by side the entire race. While still running, they both took their eyes off of the track only for a second, to look each other in the eyes. Dan smiled as he pulled slightly ahead of Dave. Dave, running on the outermost lane of the track, had to put forth a little more effort but he caught up with Dan. They were running neck and neck. Dave tried, but he could not pull ahead of Dan. He was not willing to settle for a tie.

Invitation to Renga With Me
Ladies and Gentlemen, I am returned. I am envisaging a grand entrance here, a footman perhaps, announcing my arrival, or a both doors flung wide attention grab. That I actually slipped in quietly with an itsy bitsy haiku seems far more in keeping with my actual style. Either way, I am back after an absence of a couple of weeks in which I dedicated myself fully to a family holiday. I could do no different, it has been a very full trip, and a wonderful trip for it. But though I read most of a novel, I took no time to read on Vocal, and no time to write either.
