Mévouimeur: The Story of Lilac and Silver (Part 1)
The prequal to Violet and Gold, Lady Beatrice and Lord Henry come from noble families. Both have always dreamt of a life where they could choose their own paths, untethered by the expectations of society. However, when their families arrange their marriage, they are resigned to their fate.

The grand hall of the Mevouimeur manor was alive with the sounds of a lavish banquet. Servants bustled about, carrying trays of roasted fowl, baked breads, and glasses of fine wine, as the aristocratic guests mingled and conversed in hushed tones. At the head table, Henry Mevouimeur sat, his eyes glazed over, as his father, Lord James, delivered a long-winded speech extolling the virtues and accomplishments of their noble house.
"For generations, the Mevouimeurs have stood as a beacon of strength and tradition in these lands," Lord James boomed, his voice commanding the attention of the room. "And now, on this auspicious occasion, we celebrate the coming of age of my cherished son, Henry."
Henry forced a polite smile, though his mind was far away, longing for the quietude of the gardens and the comforting presence of his dear Sarah. As his father's words droned on, he found himself slipping into a daydream, the flickering candlelight casting dancing shadows across the map he had studied so intently the night before.
"Henry," a voice suddenly reached his ears, and he turned to find his father's stern gaze fixed upon him. "It is time you address our esteemed guests."
Clearing his throat, Henry rose from his seat, his heart pounding. "Honored guests, I am truly humbled by your presence here tonight. As my father has eloquently stated, the Mevouimeur name has long been synonymous with greatness, and it is my ardent desire to continue that legacy." He paused, his eyes sweeping the room, searching for any sign of understanding or empathy. "However, I must confess that the weight of this responsibility often feels like a heavy burden upon my shoulders."
Henry's words were met with a smattering of polite applause, though his father's expression remained stern and unyielding. Lord James rose from his seat, his deep voice cutting through the din of the hall.
"My son speaks truly," James said, his gaze sweeping over the guests. "The duties of our noble house are no small matter, and it is the responsibility of every Mevouimeur to carry on the traditions that have sustained us for generations."
Henry felt a pang of dread as his father's hand came to rest on his shoulder, the grip firm and unforgiving. He knew what was coming, the familiar lecture on his lack of focus, his wandering mind, his failure.
"But I have no doubt that Henry will rise to the occasion," James continued, his tone laced with a subtle warning. "For he is the pride of our house, destined to lead us to even greater heights."
The guests erupted in a chorus of approving murmurs, and Henry found himself trapped, unable to escape the weight of their expectations. He cast a desperate glance towards the doors, longing for an opportunity to slip away, to find the solace he craved in the quiet solitude of the gardens.
As if sensing his son's discomfort, Lord James gave Henry's shoulder a gentle squeeze. "Now, my dear boy, Show them the strength and grace that will one day make you a true lord."
Henry felt his stomach twist with dread, but he nodded obediently, straightening his posture as he faced the sea of expectant faces. "It is with great humility that I stand before you all tonight," he began, his voice steady despite the turmoil within. "The Mevouimeur legacy is one that I hold dear, and I vow to do all in my power to uphold the traditions that have sustained our family for generations."
As he spoke, Henry could feel his father's gaze burning into him, silently urging him to continue. Swallowing the lump in his throat, he forced himself to smile, to project the confident, unwavering persona his father demanded.
"To our esteemed guests, I offer my sincere gratitude for joining us in this celebration. Your presence here tonight is a testament to the strength of our bonds, and I look forward to forging even greater connections in the years to come."
The guests erupted in a polite round of applause, and Henry seized the opportunity to step away from the dais, slipping behind a nearby pillar to catch his breath. Here, in the relative solitude of the shadows, he allowed his shoulders to sag, the weight of his burdens momentarily lifted.
A soft chuckle reached his ears, and Henry's head snapped up to find Sarah, his dear Sarah, standing before him with a playful grin.
"You certainly have a way with words, my lord," she said, her eyes sparkling with mirth.
Henry's heart raced as he gazed upon her, his mind still reeling from the intense pressure of the evening. "They were looking at me, or well, through me," he stammered, "and my father was right there. What was I supposed to do?"
Sarah's expression softened, and she closed the distance between them, enveloping him in a warm embrace. "Relax, I'm merely jesting," she murmured, her voice soothing. "I know how difficult it is for you, standing before all those expectant eyes, with your father's scrutiny bearing down upon you."
Henry sighed, his arms wrapping around her slender frame as he drew comfort from her presence. "I feel as though I'm being suffocated, Sarah," he confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. "The weight of their demands, their expectations , it's all so overwhelming."
Sarah pulled back slightly, her hands cupping his face as she gazed into his eyes. "I know, my love," she said, her thumb caressing his cheek. "But you must not lose hope. You are stronger than you know, and I believe in you."
Henry leaned into her touch, his heart swelling with gratitude and affection. "How can you have such faith in me, when I so often falter?" he asked, his brow furrowed.
"Because I know the true Henry, the one who dreams of adventure and freedom," she replied, a tender smile playing on her lips. "The one who sees the world not through the lens of duty and tradition, but with a heart full of wonder and compassion."
Henry felt a lump form in his throat, his eyes burning with unshed tears. "Oh, Sarah," he breathed, pulling her close once more. "How I wish I could whisk you away from this place, to a world where we need answer to no one but each other."
Sarah's grip tightened around him, and he could feel the sorrow in her embrace. "I know, my love," she murmured, her voice thick with emotion. "But we must be patient, and trust that the right time will come. Until then, hold fast to your dreams, and remember that my heart will always be yours."
Henry nodded, drawing strength from her unwavering support. In this moment, with Sarah's comforting presence surrounding him, the weight of the banquet hall and his father's expectations seemed to fade away, replaced by a glimmer of hope.
"Thank you," he whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "For being the light that guides me through the darkness."
Sarah smiled, her eyes shining with love and understanding. "Always," she replied, her fingers intertwining with his. "Now, shall we take a stroll in the gardens? I believe the fresh air will do you a world of good."
Henry nodded, a tentative smile spreading across his lips. "Yes, my dear," he said, allowing her to lead him away from the suffocating confines of the manor and towards the solace of the moonlit gardens.
Meanwhile, Lord James Mevouimeur's brow furrowed as he scanned the bustling hall, searching for any sign of his errant son. His eyes narrowed when he noticed that the servant girl, Sarah, was also nowhere to be found.
"Curse that boy and his wandering ways," James muttered under his breath, his fingers drumming against the ornate table as he contemplated his next move. The guests were still engaged in lively conversation, oblivious to the tension brewing within the lord of the manor.
With a resigned sigh, James plastered on a cordial smile and turned his attention back to the proceedings, determined to maintain the facade of a gracious host. But the underlying annoyance simmered within him, a constant reminder that he would need to have a stern word with Henry later - and perhaps pay a visit to the servants' quarters as well.
As the evening wore on, James found himself caught in a whirlwind of obligations, greeting guests, accepting compliments, and engaging in idle chatter. All the while, his mind kept drifting back to the missing pair, his suspicions growing with each passing moment.
"The boy should be here, not gallivanting about like a lovesick fool," James grumbled, his grip tightening around the stem of his wine glass. The thought of his son indulging in some foolish romantic dalliance with a mere servant girl made his blood boil.
Excusing himself from a group of his peers, James slipped away, his steps quickening as he made his way towards the servants' quarters. The sound of his boots echoed through the dimly lit corridors, his expression darkening with each stride.
Arriving at the humble abode, James paused, his hand resting on the wooden door as he contemplated his next move. Should he barge in and confront them, or approach the situation with a more measured response? The latter option, while tempting, would require a level of restraint that James was not entirely certain he possessed.
With a deep breath, he straightened his posture, schooling his features into a neutral expression before pushing the door open. The sight that greeted him, however, was not what he had expected.
The room was empty, save for a few scattered belongings and the faint glow of a dying ember in the fireplace. James' brow furrowed in confusion, his mind racing as he tried to piece together the whereabouts of the missing pair.
"Blast it all," he muttered, his frustration bubbling to the surface. Turning on his heel, James stormed back towards the grand hall, his mind already formulating a plan to hunt down his son and the insolent servant girl.
As he rejoined the guests, James forced himself to smile and engage in conversation, all the while his thoughts were consumed by the scandalous scenario unfolding in the shadows of his own domain. He would get to the bottom of this, no matter the cost, and ensure that his son's future remained firmly under his control.
Meanwhile Henry and Sarah found solace in the tranquil gardens, their fingers intertwined as they strolled beneath the canopy of stars. The weight of the evening's expectations had fallen from Henry's shoulders, replaced by a sense of peace and contentment in Sarah's comforting presence.
They settled on a secluded bench, nestled amidst the fragrant blooms and towering hedges. Henry's arm draped protectively around Sarah's shoulders, and she sighed, resting her head against his chest.
"I wish we could be amoung the stars." she murmured, her gaze fixed upon the twinkling lights above. Henry followed her gaze, "They pale in comparison to the beauty that lies before me," he whispered, his fingers gently tracing her face.
Sarah's cheeks flushed, and she tilted her head to meet his tender gaze. "If only we could leave this place behind," she said, her voice tinged with wistfulness. "No more obligations, no more expectations to meet. Just you and me, together, under these endless nights."
Henry's smile faded, and he averted his eyes, a familiar weight settling upon his shoulders. "You know I want that more than anything, Sarah." he murmured, his thumb caressing her cheek. "But my father, he...he will never understand."
Sarah reached up, her fingers tracing the worry lines etched upon his brow. "Then why do you let him dictate our lives, Henry?" she implored, her eyes shining with a mix of determination and sorrow. "Why can't we simply be together, why must you bow down to him?"
Henry sighed, his gaze downcast as he contemplated her words. "You know as well as I do the consequences of defying my father," he replied, his voice heavy with resignation. "The legacy of my house, the obligations I am bound to..."
Sarah's fingers tightened around his, and she moved closer, her forehead resting against his. "Henry," she murmured, her breath warm against his skin. "I am here, and I will stand by your side, no matter the cost."
Henry felt a surge of emotion, his heart threatening to burst from his chest. "Oh, Sarah," he breathed, pulling her into an embrace. "How I wish I could give you the world."
"Hush," Sarah soothed, her fingers combing through his hair. "All I need is you dear, nothing else matters”.
Henry held her close, his eyes burning with unshed tears. "I swear to you, Sarah, I will find a way," he whispered, his voice thick with determination.
Sarah smiled, her lips pressing a gentle kiss to his. "I believe in you, Henry," she murmured, her gaze filled with unwavering trust. "And I will be by your side, no matter what the future may hold."
The two lovers embraced, the burdens that weigh upon Henry are momentarily lifted, replaced by a glimmer of hope that burns bright.
