You see a lot of horrible things on the night shift – stabbings, burn victims, all those ‘accidents’ with vegetables – but even for me this was a new one.
On the middle of what I thought would be a quiet night, they brought them in. Only had to deal with one ‘accident’ between a bag of zucchini and a woman who lost interest in her boyfriend (so obvious). They would have stood out, anyway. To see a young couple like that so damaged and hurt, it makes you so cynical about what the world is actually like.
All this over some water…
The male told me that he went up to get a pail full of it (their system was to retrieve it from a hill to serve all their needs). It was a long weekend, so he asked his wife to head up with him.
His injuries seem far more severe. A broken crown – really a skull fracture and a missing tooth (should be clear about this) - with a bruised ego are never pleasant (never happened to him before, it seems).
She seems fine. Have her in the waiting room now and she only seems concerned about the water…and the woman with all that zucchini (overheard their discussion; a lot of interest in what she can do with her free time now).
Always on the look out for another accident.

From the files of the Dark Hunters (Hudson Walter X’s Reports): Since the crisis occurred, I have kept as accurate a record as possible of the changes that have taken place within the greater society and the world as a whole. Notably, I have seen the worst possible behaviour in my neighbours and friends and responded by trying to bring a level of sanity and decency back in our lives, with or without assistance. Naturally, this has been a very difficult task, especially for a man who once was responsible for nothing more challenging than guiding high school students towards a brighter future through discussion, reviews of transcripts, and stating the plain facts about their skills. But we have made it this far with many successes, more than I could have imagined. The only difficulties that remain lie with utilities, plans for our return to the cities, clean-ups and hunting, and, of course resources.

Perfect Little Pirate
The rough, sodden rope bit into her fingers as she swung over the roiling water far below. Reaching out with the toe of her boot, she managed to catch hold of the rain-soaked railing of the ship- and promptly slipped. Throwing herself forward, she landed hard on the deck, slamming her elbows against the wood planks. The sharp yelp of pain quickly bubbled into a laugh, and she rolled onto her back, laughing up at the gray sky as a torrent of rain washed away the soot covering her skin.

The Minute That Changed Everything
The clock struck midnight, announcing the birth of a new day. In the dimly lit alley, Sarah and Jack faced each other, their breaths visible in the chilly night air. Sarah's heart pounded against her ribs, her fingers gripping the edge of her coat nervously. Jack's eyes reflected a mix of determination and regret, signaling the weight of the moment.
