May God Have Mercy On Your Soul
A flash fiction piece.
His breath was a steady rhythm of in and out as he stared intently at the high-definition screen sitting on the desk in front of him. His right finger tightened on the cold, metallic trigger slowly, he could feel a low hum in the air. She was just sitting there on her couch reading a book. Digital scopes on screen showed him that the weapon was aimed directly at her heart. His finger paused, readings said the weapon wasn't at 100% capacity yet. Heat waves began to show clearly in the air around her. It was even visible on his screen, but she only turned a page in her book and continued reading.
"May God have mercy on your soul," he said softly to her, despite the fact that she was miles away and would never know him. He figured the big guy upstairs would know, and maybe one day, when he met his final end, God might show him a pinch of mercy as well.
He quickly pulled hard on the trigger of the remote weapon mount, and the thermal emitters released an intense heat directly into her heart. The book fell from her hands as they began to claw desperately at her chest. A panicked look spread across her face, eyes widening at the realization of how intense and sudden her pain was, an understanding that she wouldn't see tomorrow. He wondered if her life was flashing before her eyes, like he'd heard near death experience survivors describe, while the blood inside her heart began to boil. There was a small, audible, "Pop!" and immediately, she was gone.
Taking his right hand off the trigger, he touched his fingertips to his forehead, brought them down over his heart where they lingered for a moment, quickly touched his left shoulder, and finally his right. A long sigh came out of his nose and he closed his eyes, tearing them away from the screen. Then he let his breathing resume its natural, steady pace, exited out of the window on his screen, and pulled up another one where he saw a man at his table drinking coffee and thumbing through a newspaper.
He placed his hand on the trigger of the remote weapon mount and watched the man with an unblinking stare.
