My wounds stemmed from the blast. Corporal Leminsin moved. I saw the muzzle flash. I heard the deafening sound of the IED. I lost my leg. I nearly lost my mind. But I’m still serving. I’m at a desk. But I’m still wearing the uniform in the Corps. I look at my bionic leg and am proud that I saved Leminsin’s life. I was awarded the Navy Cross for my efforts, and as a fellow corporal, it felt right.
I am selfish. I guarded my battle buddy. That’s all I had to do. So I did it. That is all.
