A war story

By G. A. BoteroPublished about a year ago 1 min read

Maria enjoyed watching them play. Omar enjoyed making his sister run.

Without hesitation, they all ran.

Omar wept.

"It’s OK," Maria confidently reassured them.

Blue skies above the rubble.

The cellar murmured.

"Look" Fatima said, running her fingers through her sand filled hair.

Instantly, Maria pushed them into the stairwell.

Maria, immobilized under debris, but conscience, yelled

"Omar, Fatima. Are you OK?"

“Go get help. I’m OK but go get help."

"I love you mama; I’ll save you. Promise."

"I know" knowing quite well that she had just saved her family.
