Love and Tears

The Fractured Moon

By Oladotun Sijuwola DorcasPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

On the edge of the world, in a town that seemed frozen in time, lived a young woman named Isla. Her eyes were the color of the sea on a stormy day, and her hair was as wild as the wind that swept through the cliffs near her home. She was quiet, reserved, but her heart beat with a longing for something more than the ordinary life she had been born into.

Then, one summer, a traveler came to town—a man named Elias. He was a poet, a dreamer, and he had a way with words that made Isla’s heart race. When he spoke, it was as if the world paused and held its breath. Elias was everything Isla had ever wanted: kind, gentle, and full of passion for life. He saw her in a way no one else did, and she found herself falling for him the way the earth falls for the rain.

For months, they spent their days together—walking through the meadows, sitting by the sea, and sharing their hopes and fears. Elias read her poetry, and Isla shared stories of her childhood, of the places she had always dreamed of going. In him, she found not just love, but the reflection of her own soul.

But Elias had a secret—one that hung over him like a shadow.

One autumn evening, as the leaves turned gold and red, Elias sat by the window, looking out at the horizon. He had been quiet all evening, his fingers tapping nervously on the edge of his cup. Isla, sensing something was wrong, sat beside him.

"Is something troubling you?" she asked, her voice soft, barely above a whisper.

Elias turned to her, his eyes full of sorrow. "I’m leaving, Isla," he said. "I’ve known it for some time now."

Her heart skipped a beat. "Leaving? But… why?"

"I have to. There's no future for me here. My family… they’ve arranged a marriage for me. I’m supposed to go back to the city and marry someone I don’t love."

Tears welled in Isla’s eyes, but she fought them back. "You don't have to go. We could be together. We could leave this place and start a life, just the two of us."

Elias shook his head, his voice breaking. "I wish I could. But duty... family… it’s not that simple, Isla. You deserve more than the life I can offer."Isla reached for his hand, her heart pounding. "Then I’ll wait for you. I will wait as long as it takes. We’ll find a way."But Elias only shook his head again. "It’s not your life that waits, Isla. It’s mine that’s slipping away." He took her hands, kissing them softly. "I love you more than words can say, but love is not enough to fight fate. It never is."

The next day, Elias left.Isla waited, day after day, watching the horizon where the sea met the sky, hoping to see him return. But the weeks turned into months, and the months turned into years. The letters he had promised never came. The love they had shared seemed like a dream that slipped through her fingers like sand.

Years later, the town had changed. People came and went, the seasons passed, but Isla remained. She never left the cliffs by the sea, where she had once laughed with Elias, where they had spoken of their dreams. She grew older, and though her heart still beat with love for him, it was a love shadowed by time.

One cold winter evening, a letter arrived at her door. It was from Elias. The words, though familiar, felt distant.

My dearest Isla,I have spent my life trying to forget you, but the memory of your love has never left me. It haunts me every day, a ghost I cannot shake. I married as I was meant to, and I have children now. But not a day goes by that I do not wish I had chosen you. But it is too late. I have lived my life, and now, I must say goodbye.

I love you, always.Elias.

Isla read the letter over and over, but it did nothing to ease the emptiness inside her. Her heart had long since stopped believing in the future. She knew, deep down, that they had both been caught in the cruel game of time and fate. The next day, as the sun dipped below the horizon, Isla walked to the cliffs one last time. The wind tugged at her clothes, the sea crashed against the rocks below, and for a brief moment, she thought she saw Elias standing there, just beyond her reach. But it was only the wind.

And as the moon rose, full and bright in the night sky, Isla let herself fall into the arms of the past, knowing that love, like the tides, could never be held forever. And some loves, no matter how deep, are simply not meant to survive the storms of life.
