Lost in time

a wake-up call

By MayPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

I sat up in bed, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes. As I stood up to make my way to the bathroom, I realized it wasn't there. 'huh?' I looked around and noticed that this wasn't my room. My room had bright pink walls since I was five. When did they turn white? Where is my bookshelf, my study table and all my stuff?

I stepped out of the strange room and nothing could've prepared me for what comes next.

"Daddy, look! Mommy's up!" An unfamiliar child ran towards me and hugged me. Well, technically, he hugged my knees."Good morning, mommy!" his enthusiastic wish totally caught me off guard. Normally, I would put on a benign demeanor in front of any child but my morning was already driving me nuts. "What? I'm not your mom." the little boy was clearly taken aback at my unprecedented response.

"Hah! see, I told you, you were adopted" a girl, who I assume must've been his sister spoke from the living room.

As I walked into the living room, she whispered "Nice one, mommy" to me discreetly. Why are these weird kids calling me mommy? "Listen kids, I don't know where your mother is, but I'm not her" the girl's amused expression instantly changed to a weird 'what-are-you-talking-about' look.

"Hey honey." A man walked into the room. Finally an adult. "Hi, I don't know how I got here but can you tell me where we are, cause I need to get home." The man looked at me as if I was going crazy. In all fairness, I think I actually was going crazy.

"Babe, this is your home." He replied. "No! I live with my dad. And why are you calling me babe?" I was puzzled. "Kyra, your dad lives in Florida. And I'm your husband and these are your kids, Ben and Stacey. Does that ring a bell?"

"Well, first of all, I'm not married, and are we not in Florida?" I was going insane.

"Wait, what's the last thing you remember?" my 'husband' questioned as he shoved the kids into

"I-I remember that my mom had died 2 weeks ago. A-And my boyfriend had just broken up with me last night and.." I paused when I remembered my suicide attempt from the night before. The moment when I felt the most despondent I ever have in my life. I felt that I had no one left anymore. Not my mom, nor my boyfriend so I had decided to end it all.

"And?" my 'husband's' question brought me back to reality and I realized how I had zoned out. "And nothing. That's all I can recall." I lied.

"Listen Kyra, I don't know what to tell you, but we've been married for 9 years, and we moved here, to California, about 5 years ago." He replied.

Just then, Stacey appeared into the room and showed me a picture. "Look mommy, do you also not remember our trip to Disneyland last month?" She asked as she showed me a printed picture of the four of us. Me, and my apparent husband and kids. I noticed the date written at the bottom of the picture, June 26th, 2035.

"I'm in the wrong year!" I shouted. "I was living in 2023, I think I've somehow traveled to the future" my family seemed confused at my suggestion.

My husband held my hand tightly, trying to soothe me as I frantically searched for an explanation. "It's okay, Kyra. We'll figure this out"

My mind raced with questions, doubts, and disbelief. How was this even possible? My head spun, and I felt like I was going to pass out. And then I did.

.............

My eyes shot open as I felt myself awakening. I immediately looked around and was overjoyed to see that I was back in my room. I grabbed my phone from my nightstand and saw the date on the lock-screen, 'Tuesday, 9 May, 2023'. Words cannot express how relieved I was at the sight.

I made my way to the kitchen. My dad was cooking dinner. I realized that I'm back to the night I committed suicide. In fact, it's currently about the exact time I was doing the deed. Maybe this weird travel-to-the-future experience was needed to make me realize how my life isn't over. If I end my life, I won't ever get married, or have kids, or move to California.

Although this current point in my life is hard to deal with, things will get better and problems don't last forever.

I make my way over to my dad, and hug him. He's caught by surprise but he hugs me back. "I love you, dad." I say to him. "I love you too, sweetheart."
