Stuttered gasps broke the dawn tranquility. The somber, tear-streaked faces of my family were a secondary thought to the two shadowed figures standing sentinel at the foot of the bed. The black forms grew and morphed until they swallowed me, suffocating me, tugging at me. All of the terrible things that inhabit a beating heart evaporated with a snap. I said farewell to fury, and ache, and hunger, and sorrow.
And I greeted death, and her shadow.
