Lance Heartfelt's Wintry Wheeling Knight

As Submitted To The Out Of Season Challenge

By Marc OBrienPublished about a month ago • 3 min read

Oceanic waves crashed, invading the frozen white icy beach, melting Mother Nature's seasonal message.

Inside the gaming facility, filled with one way amusement attractions, Lance guarded the wheel behind him and the future good fortune predictor featuring a heartfelt romantic arrow chooses the end point, controlling the room’s temperature.

Near the soothsaying spindle, a calendar announced the days date, February 14, "I turned another year older," Lance realized, distracted when festive music started playing. Thinking about the carousel's lone two patrons who earlier purchased the collegiate ride all night package; the aging barker character positively grinned.

Blowing steam off, following studying and attending classes, Gary and Harriet, enjoyed each other's company, peacefully going around, not leaving the innocent enchanting couple confines, Lance could hear Harriet request, "I want one of those rings, can you go over and pull one out?"

Taking a second, Gary observed an abandoned token holder, empty,

"There are no longer any more rings," Gary reported, "budget cuts."

"You need a wheel spin."

"What's a wheel spin?"

"Let me show you," Harriet hopped to her feet grabbing Gary's hand, "Lance Happy Birth, and Valentine's Day," she shrieked.

"Harriet, you are all grown up, I see," Lance responded.

"When it gets warmer, Gunna graduate,"

"Springtime ritual of cleaning out then moving on,"

"Together," Harriet gave Gary a squeeze.

"Well, welcome to my casino," Lance open arms greeted, "invest time and walk out, entertained, since we treat you like winners."

"In other words," Harriet mumbled, "donate your spare change and you will feel better."

"If you get dealt the right video poker cards, Harriet, you can win a prize,"

"Lance," Gary paused, "what are the cherries on the wheel?"

"If your arrow lands on the cherries you can get a refrigerated pie," Lance told Gary.

"And what if my chance hits that mark?" Harriet added an inquiry.

"You, Harriet, get a cherry tee shirt to work out all the pounds from his dessert,"

"Are you going to see if you can get a late-night temptation?" Harriet encouraged, and Gary gave the signal to spin.

"Let me check things out first," Lance disappeared then reemerged seconds later before creating a swirling special effect dropping a reality hint, 'this is life'.

Like completing a task, achieving a goal, the pointer slowed its aggressive behavior halting, "the phone call," Lance described, the picture, "that means you win." Lance awarded, a small plastic ring, "you make the call."

"I am hungry," Harriet interrupted and Lance returned, putting everything in motion. Amazingly, the same results rendered, "I guess you are going to bed without any sweets," Lance announced presenting another small plastic ring.

Departing, the scene both Gary and Harriet confronted the elements together, braving the bitter weather. "Why do you think Valentine's Day is in winter’s dead period?" Gary pondered out loud trying to fit the prize onto his finger.

"Honey, it's a message, stating during the coldest days, love can warm the heart," Harriet stared exchanging the rings.

After reciting supportive sentiments, the pair locked arms approaching the darkness, together.

Months later Lance Heartfelt moved his business to an outdoor booth as the spring air breezed through, encouraging tranquil waves. Off in the distance, Harriet and Gary enthusiastically took post ceremony photos, no longer wearing souvenir gimmicks. Instead, a shiny formal jewelry piece shined as Harriet posed for the camera.

Still parading the conferred tassel cap, Harriet flirted, dragging Garry towards the boardwalk's interacting carnival teases.

"Lance Heartfelt," Harriett exclaimed, "why is February 14, Valentine's Day?"

"That is my birthday and I like spreading committed kindness,"

"If that is true," Harriett intellectually hardware flaunted, "Gary found money in his pocket and gave me this friendship token as a graduation gift,"

"Aren't you the lucky guy, Gary,"

"We came to you looking for cherry pie," Gary reminded, "And you ended up with a hot pop tart," Harriett proudly boasted, allowing Lance to give the wheel another spin.
