Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick Reveal the Things About Each Other They Think Would Surprise Other People

Even after nearly four decades of marriage, they are still discovering new things about each other.

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick have been married since 1988. That is 38 years, a lifetime in Hollywood years. And yet, they continue to surprise each other.

On June 10, the couple attended the 40th Annual Moving Image Awards at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York City, where they were honoured as recipients of the Moving Image Industry Award. While on the red carpet, they spoke to PEOPLE about the things they love about each other that not everyone might know.

The Surprising Things

When asked what might surprise people about his wife, Bacon did not hesitate.

"I find that she is constantly surprising me," he said. "Not only with who she is, because she's someone who is never stuck in one sort of idea. She's much more willing to experience new things, try new things, or change her mind about things."

Sedgwick, in turn, revealed that Bacon has a hidden talent: "Kevin is a great interior decorator," she told PEOPLE.

Bacon also shared that Sedgwick's willingness to take risks as a performer continues to impress him. He cited her role in Carolina Caroline, a film in which she has a single scene.

"Like, she's got a movie now called Carolina Caroline. It's like one scene, and it's an amazing, surprising kind of performance," he said. "I didn't see her do it, but we were talking from the set. She said, 'I'm really going for it, I hope it's going to be okay,' and I saw it, and I was like, 'Holy s---. I haven't seen you do this before, so that's cool as a performer and a person."

A Rare Joint Award

While the couple has won many awards individually, they noted that they do not often receive honours as a pair.

"We don't think [we've won one] together," Sedgwick said. She described the award as a "lovely" moment and said that she and Bacon were both "very happy" to be at the film museum event.

"It's a wonderful honour to be in New York. It's a beautiful New York museum. It's really worth the trek to come out here if you're any kind of cinephile, just to understand the history of filmmaking," she added.

Bacon agreed: "We have spent our lives on set making movies. We love this museum. It's a great honour."

The Secret to a Lasting Marriage

When asked about the secret to their long-lasting marriage, Sedgwick has previously offered a refreshingly honest answer.

"I joke that the secret to a successful marriage is to not take marriage advice from celebrities," she told PEOPLE in 2020. "I guess if I had to think too much about [our marriage], that would probably not be a good thing. We just got lucky. I honestly believe that's the truth."

Bacon echoed that sentiment in a 2023 interview: "To me, walking down the street together just shooting the s--- in the middle of the night still feels like a nice place to be."

How They Met

Sedgwick and Bacon fell in love in 1987 on the set of Lemon Sky (1988). She later recalled on Conan that Bacon bought the entire cast group dinners, but she did not show up. He instead recommended that she get a massage at the hotel where he was staying.

She suggested that if his gym workout and her massage ended at the same time, they could grab dinner after.

"And I'm thinking, 'Yeah, sure, that's not going to happen. I'm not going to tell him when my massage is," Sedgwick said, before joking: "Years later, he told me he had actually called downstairs, and I was getting massaged, which is kind of creepy, but whatever."

They got engaged in December 1987 and married the following year. They welcomed their first child, Travis, in 1989, and their second, Sosie Ruth, in 1992.

The Flutter That Never Fades

In a 2013 interview with Redbook, Sedgwick admitted that the spark is still very much alive.

"When he walks into a room, I'm still ... I mean, my heart gets a little fluttery, and I think, 'Oh! He's so cute. He's so hot.' That's literally the first thing I think. You can ask people on the set, it's palpable. He's still a mystery to me."

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick have built one of Hollywood's most enduring marriages. They respect each other's talents, support each other's risks, and still manage to surprise each other after nearly 40 years.

Their secret? Luck, love, and never taking each other for granted.
