Kalena Abelmann, 16, Died in a Car Accident on Hawaii's Pali Highway Remembered as Someone Who Made Others Feel Seen
She was graduating early to pursue the FBI. She loved traveling, experiencing life, being there for people. Her community is grieving what they lost.
Kalena Abelmann was 16 when she died on June 18 in a single-vehicle collision on the Pali Highway in Oahu. She was speeding, lost control, hit a concrete embankment, and was ejected from her car. She fell roughly 50 feet into a ravine.
The Honolulu Fire Department retrieved her body from the ravine. She wasn't wearing a seatbelt. Police are still investigating whether alcohol or drugs were involved, but there's no indication they were.
What matters is who she actually was to the people around her.
The Life She Was Building
Kalena had her future mapped out. Not vaguely planned. Mapped out. She was graduating from high school a year early to pursue a career with the FBI. That's not something most 16-year-olds do. That requires drive, focus, and the kind of determination that comes from knowing what you want.
Her family described her as courageous, strong, creative, and adventurous. She traveled. She loved experiencing life, seeing everything, getting out into the world. Not in a reckless way, in a purposeful way. She was living deliberately.

What Her Closest Friend Said
Avinni Texeira was one of Kalena's closest friends. She told Island News something specific about who Kalena was: "She made the biggest impact on my life. I mean, I can't even remember life without her in it."
That's not hyperbole. That's someone trying to explain what the absence actually feels like. The world is smaller now because Kalena's not in it.
Texeira talked about the things people are saying about Kalena that she always listened, that she made people feel seen, and that she checked up on people. "She was one of those people who always listened and was always someone I could talk to. She just always understood."
That's the person she was. Not the moment of the accident. The years of being someone who paid attention to her friends, who made them feel like they mattered, who actually showed up emotionally.
What Her Family Is Carrying
Her parents are Rick and Alicia Abelmann. She had two brothers, Kai and Kekoa. She was a granddaughter, niece, or cousin. A full person with a full life in a full family.
The family released a statement: "Her kindness, laughter, free spirit, and loving heart will leave a lasting impact on the many lives she touched."
They're grieving, and they're relying on their faith to carry them through. Their statement says: "We rely on our Savior Jesus Christ to carry us through and know we will be with Kalena again."
That's how they're holding on. The certainty that this isn't the end, just a separation. That's the framework they have for surviving the unsurvivable.
GoFundMe
Her family set up a GoFundMe to help with the costs of losing a child, including funeral expenses, medical costs, and the financial reality of sudden loss. The response has been overwhelming. People donating. People are sending support.
The family said in their statement: "We are overwhelmed by everything that has happened over the past few days. Our hearts break that anyone has or might feel this gaping hole that is the loss of a child."
They know they're not alone in this grief. They know other people have lost children. They know some people in their community are experiencing the same unbearable thing. That doesn't make it easier. It just means they understand the full weight of what they're carrying.
A 16-year-old had plans. She was going to graduate early. She was going to join the FBI. She was going to continue traveling, experiencing, and being someone who made other people feel valued. She had years ahead of her decades.
And then she was speeding on a highway, lost control, and that was it.
There's no moral to this story. No lesson about why this happened. Just: she was here, people loved her, she mattered to the people around her, and now she's gone. Her family and her friends are left with the absence. With the person who always listened, who always made others feel seen, gone.
Kalena Abelmann was courageous, determined, kind, and someone who made the people around her feel valued. She was going to do big things. She had her future mapped out.
And then one moment changed everything, and her community is left grieving someone who should still be here.
Her family is holding onto their faith. Her friends are holding onto the memory of someone who actually cared about them. And everyone who knew her is carrying the absence of someone who made a real difference in their lives.
That's what her family wants people to know. Not how she died. That she lived, and she mattered, and she's gone, and they're going to miss her.
