Just Child's Play
It's all fun and games until someone snatches something of yours.
Maxwell locked on to his target almost immediately: a boy about half his size. Where his target went, Maxwell went, too. Maxwell moved a few seconds after the boy and stayed just out of his reach. Maxwell knew the key to a successful grab was to make sure his mark did not realize he was there and this boy did not notice him at all.
Impressive, I thought.
Maxwell’s turquoise eyes sparkled with excitement. I leaned to see what exactly had caught his attention and saw the boy quickly filling his backpack. Based on the intensity of Maxwell’s stares, the items going into this pack must have been valuable. Priceless even. Maxwell studied the boy’s movements, never taking his eyes off of him. Maxwell inched closer to the boy, his hands shaking from the adrenaline pumping through his body. He watched the boy pick up the backpack from the ground. He needed to make his move. It was now or never. Maxwell ran towards the boy at full speed and in one, swift movement, ripped the bag out of the boy’s hands.
The mothers that saw what happened shot me a disapproving glare. I just shrugged.
“Toddlers. Am I right?”
