Annie stood in the kitchen doorway of their small farmhouse. She called out to her husband, Sam, “Hurry home! Supper is almost ready. I’m cooking your favorites, fried chicken and apple pie.”

“I can smell that chicken frying from here,” Sam replied, as he disappeared into the parched cornfield. He was on his way to find Bell, the dairy cow, and lead her back to the barn.

Annie finished cooking and set the food on the table while she waited for Sam to return.

Bell came home but Sam was never found, seen, nor heard from again.
