In Plain Sight

The Safeguarding meeting

By Susan WhittakerPublished about a year ago • 4 min read

Kelly was the first at the buffet table after a long morning of boring presentations. A break and food at last she thought.

She was just leaning over to help herself to the pasta salad when she felt the touch of a hand brushing her left breast. Her breasts were large and today were hanging free as she had decided to go braless under a roomy caftan. The hand was touching her near the nipple, very gently, but for just a shade too long to be a mistake.

She turned around prepared to give whoever it was a mouthful and found herself staring into sightless eyes.

OMG, she thought, it’s a blind man. Immediately she felt ashamed of herself. The poor man couldn’t see and was trying to find food on the buffet table.

“Are you okay?” she asked, “Do you need help with getting food from the buffet?”

He was taller than her and handsome. Kelly also noted that he looked very smart in a navy-blue suit and white shirt.

She took his plate and started to help him find food “Do you want ham?” she enquired. “Fruit salad?” And so on.

When his plate was heaped with food, she handed it back to him. Commenting “I don’t think we have met” followed by “I am Kelly Bowman, a teacher at Begley Elementary here for some education on safeguarding.”

“And I am Paul Breverton – also a teacher, but at the Institute for the Blind and Visually Impaired.”

There followed an animated conversation with Paul explaining the work he did with the blind. They were still chatting when the bell rang for the second session.

The second session went by in much the same way as the morning session – boring and belaboured. Kelly was glad when it was time to leave.

She did not see Paul as she made her way to the train station. She reflected on their meeting, he was certainly an attractive man, she thought.

On the station she fell into conversation with a woman named Wendy, who was also an Elementary school teacher and had been to the presentations. They boarded the train together and when they were seated Kelly commented on how boring the day had been.

“Not entirely” Wendy commented “When we did the group activity I was in a group with a man who had wandering hands!”

“What?” Kelly was shocked “My group just sat and chatted”

.“There is an explanation though. We were taking notes and chatting and the man sitting next to me reached over and put his hand on my knee and slid it up my leg touching my thighs”

Kelly knew what was coming next before Wendy said it.

“He was blind though – when we were making introductions at the beginning of the group session he said he was blind and he had his white stick next to him. Anybody else and I would have been furious but with a blind man you have to make exceptions. He can’t see so he must have got mixed up. I think he is brilliant just being at the meeting. I helped him to make notes and didn’t say anything.”

“It wasn’t Paul Breverton by any chance?”

Wendy looked shocked “Did you also meet him?”

Kelly nodded “When he touched my breast”

They looked at each other – he was blind but what remained unspoken was he as innocent as he appeared?

As Kelly and Wendy chatted, further down the same train Paul Breverton was hanging onto a pole to maintain his balance. He had his white stick in his other hand.

A young woman, Kylie, saw the blind man standing and going over to him touched his arm “If you hold on to me, I can guide you to a seat next to me.”

“Very kind” Paul seemed delighted.

They sat next to each other. Paul’s leg was touching Kylie’s – he could feel her thigh through the thin material of her dress, warm and inviting.

Kylie went on talking to him, brightly and in a loud voice. He smiled to himself, she must think I am deaf too!

“Which is your station?” she was all business, and she guided him off the train at the correct station.

He tapped his stick along the station platform. He could hardly wait to get to his own home where Sheila would be waiting for him. Dear Sheila, his latest girlfriend. Thinking back on the day, Paul remembered the feel of those huge breasts at the salad bar, the smooth legs during the group work and the feel of Kylies thighs on the train. Sheila was going to be a very lucky lady tonight, he was hornier than he had been in a very long while. Tap, tap, tap his white stick on the street where he lived now.. He might just take her on the kitchen table, who needed a bed?

Finally he tapped his way up his own drive and after some feeling around put his key in the lock. The door swung open. “Hello sweetheart, It’s me – I’m home.”
