In Another Life
Two lovers break up to protect one another only to realize breaking up wasn't the actual solution.
“Don’t you walk away from me, Lissana!”
She stopped a few feet ahead. She looked back, a tear slipping down her cheek.
“Don’t walk away from me? Are you serious Marzen? After everything we’ve been through you don’t get to call this quits!”
She sniffled, “You don’t get to call us quits.” she whispered.
Marzen ran a hand through his dark wavy hair. He sighed. “Love, please believe me when I say that is not what I’m trying to do.”
“Then what is it that you are trying to do? I merely suggested we should go into separate hiding. But you? You broke off our engagement in front of everyone! You humiliated me!”
He took a step forward, his hand reaching out to her. But she stepped back. Shaking her head.
“No. I-I can’t do this.”
Lissana quickly disappeared from his sight and Marzen? He didn’t do anything to stop her. He simply looked at the ground. “I didn’t mean to hurt you my love.”
Days later Lissana had gone into hiding. Following her original plan. The one that was supposed to happen. She sat by a window, drinking a sweet floral scented tea. Her friend, Lady Penny silently sipped her own tea in support.
Everything was peaceful and quiet in the cabin until a beast landed in front of the home. A wyvern with large wings and sharp claws. It screeched, shattering the window in front of them. Her guards come quickly, blocking the glass shards from piercing their skin.
“Outcastes.” Lissana muttered.
“They’ve been outcasted from society and yet they still cause trouble.” Lady Penny sighed
“I suppose they can’t help but cause even more trouble for themselves.”
Lissana signaled her guards to go see what they wanted. As one of them approached, the man riding on the wyvern held his sword out. A warning that if he were to come any closer, he wouldn’t be responsible for whatever happens next.
Her guard asked, “What is your purpose for being here?”
“To take back what’s mine.” The man said.
Her guard looked back. That’s when she approached. Her friend was standing beside her in the cold. The snowdrops flutter through the sky as Lissana asked. “What? What little honor you may have left?”
The man snarled, his wyvern in response attempted to blow something in their face. Smoke? Flames? No one could tell. The wyvern flopped down into the snow the moment Lady Penny snapped.
The man struggled to get the creature off. When he did he glared at Lady Penny. “You witch.”
“That I am indeed.” She smiled. Her long pink hair and lashes stood out with the snow on top.
The man snickered. “You think you could survive these mountains?! Not on my watch!” He whistled. One of the guards flinched. Her eyes widening as she shouts.
“NO! That’s a call for-”
Dozens of wyverns fly through the sky. As the sky filled with wings, Lissana’s heart dropped.
“Run!” She said. Her friend, servants, and guards ran away from the cabin. Multiple wyverns attacking it with fireballs. The weight of their flames caused the ground to shake and Lissana fell down a different path.
“Anna!” She screamed.
“Pen! Just go! I’ll catch up later!”
Lissana shook her head. But it was too late. Lissana was buried by inches of snow. At the very least none of the wyverns attacked her. But her body was cold. So cold that when she woke up, she felt a warm hand caress her cheek.
Her eyes flutter open to see him. Marzen. He was crying. Tears dripped down his face. Sniffles so loud it rang in her ears. By the time he opened his eyes again she was staring.
“Ah! My love…” He choked. His arms wrap around her. His body visibly shook with every passing moment.
“I am fine, dear.” She whispered hoarsely.
He shook his head, smoothing down her black hair. “I apologize. I thought that if I pretended to leave you, they would stay away.”
Lissana lightly smiled. She wiped another one of his tears that was slipping.
“I know it was fake. However, it caused me great pain.”
“I know. I’m sorry.” He whispered.
He pressed a long warm kiss to her forehead. Then pressed their foreheads together.
“I love you, Lissana.”
“I love you too, Marzen.”
Meanwhile, from above Lady Penny watched.
“Oh my favorite couple is back together.” She cried. “Are they not cute together?” She sniffled.
She looked at a guard standing behind her. He glanced at her. Glanced back at Lady Lissana.
He gave her his handkerchief and she immediately used to dab her tears dry.
Though watching them nuzzle into each other she sadly smiled, “When will it be my turn?”
The guard beside her walked away. Heading down to round up the other guards.
“Soon.” He mumbled under his breath.
