Ice World Explorer (Chapter 1)
Sci-fi Story
The white snow-covered forest was almost completely silent, if not for the occasional disheveled snow that would fall to the ground.
Oso sat in the snow. Though the temperature was a bit colder today, he felt just fine. His fur was wrapped extra tightly. He had to wait for his chance. Today was going to be the day. He had to catch the Coloequus.
He glanced to his right. The dark silhouette of Avtar could be seen through the snow-covered brush.
"Avtar always hated these long waits. Hunting for prey was never a job he enjoyed." Oso thought. "Just hold a bit longer my friend, today is a prize we can miss."
Suddenly, a small crackling could be heard in the distance. Oso held his body tightly.
"Now is the moment," he thought.
He clutched his spear tightly with his right hand and placed his hand on the laser attached to his waist.
Though the air was cold, Oso didn't mind the sweat accumulating on his body. He had been waiting long enough for his prey. Now was the time.
The icy trees began to shake slightly as a large figure began to emerge from the brush.
A large brown creature, almost matching the size of the trees, slowly lurked into the clearing. It made sloshing noises as the hair on it's body sagged and dropped like a wet piece of moss. The only visible portion of its face was a black nose that protruded through the thick hair.
Oso gazed as the creature made its way into the open. Any person not familiar with this creature may believe it to be a docile, mammoth-like beast, but Oso knew better from his experience.
Suddenly, the beast stopped in its tracks in the middle of the cold clearing. It seemingly appeared frozen; a compliment to the scenery surrounding it.
Oso chuckled to himself. "Just what I knew you'd do you old bastard. You know I'm here. We are all here waiting for you. And to top it off, you were looking for us."
The beast made a loud moaning noise as the ground vibrated from the sound waves. Once its mouth closed, the beast began inhaling. However, this breath did not pause as the inhalation continued.
"Here we go," Oso thought, his hair standing on end for the beast:s next move. "He's going to dash in three...two...one…"
Once the beast's body grew ⅓ it's size, the droopy beast came to life. In a flash, it dashed toward the other side of the clearing, like a rocket firing from a launchpad.
Oso jumped up and grabbed a red rope tied tightly around a tree. Putting all his strength into making sure the rope did not break, Oso did not notice the sharp wailing coming from the droopy-haired beast in the brush.
Another red rope positioned across the clearing was being held by Avtar. Both of the men held the ropes in place as each rope began to vibrate violently from the struggling beast.
Though the beast continued to struggle and moan, Oso smiled.
"It's all secure," Oso thought quickly as he knew the rope was going nowhere. He grabbed his spear and dashed toward the sound of the beast. Avtar was close behind.
Grunting and rustling filled the air as the beast struggled in the constraints. Dashing to a small bush, Oso looked at a stake in the ground.
“The magnetic stake is holding well,” Oso said as Avtar quickly caught up with him. “This will definitely be a great catch.”
Avtar stared at the beast, still struggling before raising a hand and pointing.
“I hope your stake holds strong. Look, Oso! The stake may not hold for long.”
Oso looked up and saw Avtar pointing straight at the branch holding the beast. With every movement, the branch cracked and splintered.
“Damn, I need to get that fur.
Just as Oso jumped to his feet, the branch gave one last giant snap. The beast fell to the ground, stunned for only a few moments.
Oso ran a few meters from the beast. Taking a small vial, filled with red substance, from his belt, he threw the vial directly at the beast, exploding into a thick green mist. Inside the mist, the beast could be heard squirming before a loud boom premeditated a short silence.
“There it goes, Oso! Be ready!”
Dashing from the mist, the beast charged straight toward Oso. The ground rumbled as he tightened his legs, jumping out of the path of the beast. Oso rolled in the snow, as the beast stormed away. For a few moments, Oso lay still in the snow, silent.
“Are you alright? Oso, answer me! The beast didn’t harm you, did he?” Avtar yelled toward Oso as he continued to lay still.
A small chuckle could be heard coming from Oso. He lifted his head and gazed where the beast had been hit by the mist. A thick fur lay on the ground, mostly in pieces. Oso smiled as he got to his feet. Brushing the snow from his clothing, Oso turned and smiled at Avtar.
“We got it my friend. It wasn’t as much fur as I wanted, but we got it!”
