I Began Writing Notes During Meetings Without Looking Down
Workplace Paranoia | Psychological Horror | Slow-Burn Black Comedy | Techno-Noir
I started taking notes during meetings without looking at the page.
It was easier than it sounds. Keep the pen moving. Nod occasionally. Maintain eye contact with whoever was speaking.
At first, nobody cared.
Then Martin noticed.
He stopped halfway through an explanation about quarterly projections and stared at my hand.
“You’re writing?”
“Yes.”
He glanced at my notebook.
I didn’t.
That bothered him more than I expected.
After that, people started watching.
Whenever someone spoke, the pen moved.
When nobody spoke, sometimes it moved anyway.
During one meeting, Allison laughed at something the director said.
I wrote for eleven seconds.
She stopped laughing.
The next week, Martin asked whether I could circulate my notes after meetings.
“No.”
I kept writing.
He smiled like he thought I was joking.
The pen continued across the page.
People became careful around me.
They stopped making side comments.
Stopped complaining about management.
Stopped saying things like between us.
One afternoon, Allison whispered something to Martin before the call started.
I wrote it down.
I couldn’t hear what she said.
That was when Martin asked how I knew.
I told him I didn’t.
After that, they started joining meetings early so they could see whether I was already there.
I always was.
Eventually, someone complained to HR.
HR scheduled a private video call.
The woman introduced herself, explained that several coworkers felt uncomfortable, and asked what exactly I had been recording.
I smiled.
Then I turned the notebook toward the camera.
Every page was blank.
She stared at it for a long time.
My pen was still moving.
I watched her face carefully and began the first sentence.
