I am Bexley: The Bloodletters Scourge chap 34
“The Irish Goodbye”
“What exactly are we doing here Amory? I don’t why I still follow you. You’re such a sweet fool,” Indigo signs to me with a seething look, hitting me.
I looked at the bloodless Bloodletter, lying on the dirt ground with its head smashed in. The zombies were closing in on us.
All of this because some stuck up zombie named Bexley convinced others that we could all live together without fighting.
“Oh my God, I’m so sorry this happened!” Emma cries, tears running down her face as India, her partner, drags her to safety.
“Ax! Ax! Has anyone seen Ax?” Stan frantically signs to me. I shrug, as Indigo berates me.
“They shouldn’t have come here! They don’t have any business here in our zombie community. They’re all parasites!” One of the local zombie leaders sign to us, pointing to me and then the dead Bloodletter on the ground.
“It is what it is,” I sign to the leader, who starts shoving me with a dull end of a blade. I get in front of Indigo, who looks like a frightened baby bird all of a sudden.
Cara and Ben, the new humans in our group, also run by, trying to get out of the zombie town.
“Hurry y’all! Let’s get the hell out of here!” Cara yells as she holds Ben’s hand, motioning for us and the other stray Bloodletter that trusted our group. I stay still and Indigo is still behind me. I knew that that zombie elite we spoke to would betray us. They only wanted their jewels and gems, but they weren’t ever going to let us Bloodletters actually live with them. Ax had knowledge of where to find easy gems in a cave and field, and we ended up luckily finding a ton after we left the church. Now I believe those gems must’ve been cursed.
Zombies always believed they were better than us. They even thought humans were better than us.
The other Bloodletter, who saw the fight unfold as to how this ‘Letter got his face smashed in for offending another zombie immediately ran away. God knows where. I don’t think we will see him again. I don’t blame him.
All because he made a weird mistake when signed something to another zombie? I remember the zombie and how he started growling at the unassuming Bloodletter. Then they all attacked him. Ax, a zombie that was apart of our group, starting fighting off the zombies. I don’t know where he is or if he’s dead or undead.
He was supposed to be the lucky lottery winner that would stay in a zombie loft downtown just to start getting acclimated to the new culture and be adjusted slowly to zombie civilization. I don’t really follow politics. Honestly…This is all bullshit to me.
All I really care about is Indigo. She’s my Moon. My everything. If I had a beating heart, she’d be the reason it ever had a song to play.
Stan comes over, a zombie I don’t trust either, even if he says he’s on our side. He’s that uppity zombie Bexley’s husband or something.
“Amory? What happened? I still can’t find Ax. I know that the others just left to a forest somewhere nearby. Christ, what the hell happened?” He looks over at the angry zombie crowd. I shrug to him, as Indigo pokes at the dead Bloodletter, giving me the evil eye.
“Friends, please, we aren’t here to fight!” Stan signs to the zombie hoard.
“He told me he was gonna cut off our heads!” A tall zombie woman signs.
Indigo hisses as she stands, signing angrily, “He was signing hello to you, you stupid, ignorant fools!”
“No he wasn’t! Bloodletters don’t know how to say anything other than kill, or be rude to us civilized zombie folk!” One of the town leaders sign. “We agreed to let a few stray ‘Letters in because they paid and won the elite lottery stream. But if they don’t follow zombie law? They won’t last.” The zombie leader gets too close to Indigo, making her growl, pushing him away. The zombies get closer.
“We better just leave, guys,” Stan signs to me and Indigo, looking depressed and disoriented.
“I thought you were looking for that big fat zombie?” Indigo signs.
Stan nods, looking around hastily for a way to leave. “I can’t find him. Fuck, this is bad.”
“Your kind isn’t allowed here for a reason!” A zombie man signs furiously, making violent gestures toward us.
“We didn’t do anything wrong you idiot!” Indigo pushes him and he shoves her so hard, she lands a foot away.
Stan runs to Indigo, helping her up, “Are you okay, oh my God…” he signs as he helps her to her feet.
My fury and rage breaks and I can’t feel anything, I just see pitch black as I start shaking, pounding on the zombie that attacked her.
I feel someone try to take me off him, but I don’t know who it is.
“Amory!” I hear a weird squeak that sounds like my name, and I turn.
Indigo. Small and helpless yet strong and angry like an oxen. Her eyes look like the full moon. My Moon.
“You’re a stinking, ugly, worthless parasite. I can’t wait to watch you slowly rot all alone and disappear from this planet. You’ll rot. Oh, you’ll rot,” the inside voice crawls in my throat like a choke-hold. The voice is my old handler that died, Rhetha. The witch. The alchemist, the terror of my undead life.
Ever since she died, she’s been haunting my body, my mind, my very existence. Am I crazy? I must be crazy. This can’t be real.
This can’t be…
Indigo hugs me, I start to see blue again and the bright red sun.
She hums with me sometimes. It helps me when I feel like something has trapped me, made me a ghost inside my undead body.
Suddenly I feel my body twitch, my claws ripping into the ground and into my body.
The sounds of leathery flesh being ripped open.
Stan and Indigo stand back, their eyes as big as a mountain’s face as I have no control of my own body. I feel the sensation of flesh being ripped off my body. I can’t scream. I can’t feel anything but there’s an aching terror ripping through me as I drive my claws into my own skin.
Rhetha, you got me, you stole me away from Indigo once. Now you got her away from me forever.
She’s possessed me with her evil spirit.
“Amory! Amory! No! Stop!” Indigo begs me in a terrified sign.
Stan is holding her back. Away from me.
For her protection.
Oh God, Indigo. Run, run away from me. Hurry before my body starts hurting you.
“You don’t belong here!” Another zombie signs hatefully, and I agree. I know I don’t belong here. These zombies are the real monsters.
They don’t create. Not like me. I can create beautiful art. Gems like they’ve never seen. Things their puny brains can’t fathom.
I’ll show them.
“Sleep you disgusting parasite, go to sleep and never wake up,” the inside voice slithers in my ear.
I go down on the ground. I obey my handler Rhetha, like I’ve always done.
Indigo runs off. Stan stays.
The old Irish goodbye. No real reason to stay. I’m worthless. I deserve that and worse.
I look at a clover nearby, wishing I could cry. But nothing comes out.
