She Was Happy to Let It Go
The wind was calm, but the string was tight. It focused on her big smile and bright eyes. Then she let go, the address tag grazing her coat. It reveled in the joy of her ever-shrinking eyes and boisterous laughter. She waved and jumped; the tag jostled in the wind as though waving back.
Sadness overcame it, though, as the little girl shrank into the obscurity of the landscape. The wind strengthened and pulled it faster and faster. Sunshine warmed it in the chilling air, and it settled in for the ride of its life.

The End
The ejecta rose quickly, chasing the station like a cat on a mouse. The minutes passed slowly as the crew watched the firestorm rage across Earth’s surface. They had front row seats to the end of the world. The final command came as the fiery maelstrom swept the last of the unscorched earth into its flaming maw. The onboard computer indicated the convergence point to be Washington D.C.

Perfect Little Pirate
The rough, sodden rope bit into her fingers as she swung over the roiling water far below. Reaching out with the toe of her boot, she managed to catch hold of the rain-soaked railing of the ship- and promptly slipped. Throwing herself forward, she landed hard on the deck, slamming her elbows against the wood planks. The sharp yelp of pain quickly bubbled into a laugh, and she rolled onto her back, laughing up at the gray sky as a torrent of rain washed away the soot covering her skin.

In the muddy trenches of France, 1918, Lance Corporal Horace Yule felt an unsettling weight on his boots. It wasn't just the cloying mud but also the dried blood of another soldier. Despite his best efforts, the stains resisted his attempts to remove them. A plump rat darted past him, sending shivers down his spine. These discomforts, however, were trivial compared to the impending danger. Nightfall was approaching, and soon Horace and his comrades would venture into no-man's land to raid the German trenches.
