From The Deep Blue

Caged In The Pacific Ocean

After three long weeks under the hotel we were running out of ideas for a way out. The meals were sparse and the beds were unbearable. You would think for the quality of the resort that we were under that our kidnappers could do better, but no. That is the way that it was and we had no choice but try and get used to it. How we wound up below here was beyond our control and all we had was one another until we either died or escaped. The way we figured that if anyone could find us they would have by now.

My younger brother and I had been the target of a kidnapping and we were to young to understand why. The owner of the resort was an acquaintance of our fathers and a vengeful one at that. Our father owned the biggest tourist attraction in the town and this particular hotel was struggling because of it. He had recently built a new hotel and the one we were trapped under was losing all of its business. This made the owners angry and they were holding us for ransom.

We made jokes about it just to try and get through the reality of it but we knew that it was serious. We wished hopefully every day that we would come up with an escape plan that would work. Better yet crossed our fingers that our dad would come storming through the doors with the police. Our little beds were about twenty feet apart and we were surrounded by white walls with the exception of one. Because we were underneath a hotel that was surrounded by water we were looking through a piece of glass into a dark blue abyss of the ocean.

This was something that would be much cooler if we were in the position to enjoy it, but we weren't. Although at times I wondered what would happen if it cracked or if there was some kind of natural disaster. Yet none of these ways of thinking assured me that it could possible be a means to a way out. Although on many occasions it was the highlight of any amusement that we had throughout our experience being trapped under the resort. At times I wondered if there was other rooms that could also see the water and I assumed that there had to be but my brother told me that would be crazy. He swore up and down that if there was than someone would have found us by now.

One day we were more bored and restless than usual when we saw something indescribable. After growing tired of our games we made up and lack of proper nutrients we silently stared off into the deep blue beyond us. For the most part it was pretty dark and there wasn't a whole lot that we could see unlike the hotel rooms above us. I wish, and I am sure my brother secretly wished, that we could see the same. Yet the day that we saw this that wasn't exactly our trail of thought.

It was early in the morning after we had eaten our bland breakfast. Like every morning they had put two dried oatmeal bowls under the door for us. It tasted horrible as usual and yet we scarfed it down like our lives depended on it because well, it did. We were gazing helplessly looking for entertainment in the glass wall when it passed. It was huge and it made us both jump and scream. We dropped our bowls and grabbed each other terrified. Pointlessly we both ran and hid under my blankets because my bed was farthest from where it had passed. Undoubtedly we had witnessed a shark pass us and we had no idea what we were going to do.

It was almost half the size of the glass wall itself and along side of it appeared to have been a baby shark. My brother was more startled than I was curious and so after we saw it sat there and trembled. I am not sure what we thought that the shark was going to do, but just as we thought we were going to die we heard our door slam open. Before we had the chance to react our blankets were torn off of us and our father leaned down and gave us a big bear hug.
