Friendship

Saint Mary's

By Kale SinclairPublished 4 months ago 3 min read

Friendship is a gift human beings have the honor of sharing with one another. Constructed over days, weeks, months, or years, it is a bond we create as a safe place to share emotions, secrets, desires and truths. Although breakable, friendship is a tether to moments in time that drift with every passing second. Enjoy the moments. Cherish your friends. Take nothing for granted.

*

White shirts, crooked ties, little kids in a hallway line

Catholic school prayers while we laughed at the devine

Backpacks bigger than our dreams back then

Didn’t know those desks would make lifelong friends

*

Trading snacks at lunch, getting yelled at by the teachers

Talking about our future while smoking beneath the bleachers

Stealing Nips from somebody’s dad’s fridge

Now those blurry little nights feel legendary as shit

*

Then life split roads after eighth grade ended

Different hallways, moments in time suspended

But every Friday night somehow we found

The same three idiots tearing up the town

*

And we swore we’d never fade away

No matter how much life changed

From Arlington nights to wedding rings

Some bonds outlive everything

*

We were kids getting drunk in the woods

Running from the cops like immortal hoodlums would

Smoking out of apples at thirteen years old

Thought we’d stay reckless forever, never grow old

*

Now one’s got babies, one’s got vows

One still dances terrible somehow

But after all these years, through every storm we’ve seen

You’re still my family… you’re still my team

*

Hungover sunrise at the Dunkin’ drive-thru

Hash browns, black coffee, “bro I’m dying” type moods

Grease-stained pizza boxes covering the floor

Laughing so hard we couldn’t breathe anymore

*

Lake house nights up in New Hampshire cold

Bluetooth speakers and confidence bold

Dancing off beat like nobody cared

Looking back now, man, what we had was rare

*

Every year moved faster than the last one did

Now we talk careers and wives and kids

But underneath the grown-up lives we wear

We’re still those dumb kids sneaking smoke in the air

*

And somehow through the years we changed

But somehow we all stayed the same

Through every goodbye, hello, pact, and argument

Real friends grow...becoming permanent

*

We were kids getting drunk in the woods

Running from the cops like immortal hoodlums would

Smoking out of fruit at thirteen years old

Thought we’d stay reckless forever, never grow old

*

Now one’s got babies, one’s got vows

One still loses keys going out downtown

But after all these years, through every high and low

You’re still my family… that’s all I know

*

One day we’ll be old farts telling stories from our archives

Laughing ‘bout the dumbest nights of our lives

About cheap beer, fake IDs, and scraped-up knees

About how we thought we had forever at seventeen

*

And maybe our kids will become best friends too

Maybe they’ll hear all the chaos we lived through

But what I hope they understand when the story ends

Is the rarest thing in life… is twenty-plus years of real friends

*

We were kids getting drunk in the woods

Breaking every rule like young legends should

Dunkin’ at sunrise, pizza every night

Three lost souls somehow getting life right

*

Now there’s wedding songs and children’s names

But when we link up it’s never changed

Almost thirty years and the feeling still feels new

First grade siblings… to breaking curfew

Adulthood doesn't seem so scary anymore

Save for gluten, dairy, and trips to the hardware store

*

From classroom desks… to grown up scars

Crazy how forever doesn’t feel that far

*

Three kids from private school still chasing old dreams

We still remain family after all these years in between
