Death's Beauty

By Chris JacquesPublished 4 years ago 4 min read

There is life all around me but all I could hear is the sound of my own heartbeat and my feet dragging against the dirt trail. Carefully not touching anything that I walk by, dodging the trees, the animals that would come by, even the leaves on the ground. Once I make my way to the top of the hill I move my black hair out of my face followed by my matte black jacket and place it next to the bench beside me and sit, staring into the distance to see so much of life. Closing my eyes, I take a deep breath to calm myself. Replaying the happiest and most terrifying moment of my life.

"Hey death?" I hear her voice appear beside me, opening my eyes I see a woman in all white, it was Life. "Yes?" I replied.

"Why does everyone love me, but hate you?" Life finally asked, noticing how I was always alone. I Lift my hands off my lap to face my palms, eyes tearful. "Because you are the most precious of lies, the most beautiful and convincing one, but I am the hideous truth that everyone refuses to accept." Life begins to reach over to hold my hand hoping to comfort me but I stand up and step away, shaking my head.

Life looks up at him, her heart sank to her stomach, the only sound life can hear now is my glass heart shattering next to hers. "Everything we have is amazing, our memories, our time together, why must you call it a lie?" Her voice was shaken, the angelic glow that she had seem to dim, her face now forming wrinkles on her forehead, her eyes beginning to widen. I kneel down to be on her level, to try to help her understand. "Because Life, all that is temporary, eventually I will cause it to end." Knowing what I must do, I take one final look at the beauty Life has and say my final goodbye.

I begin to walk away, one foot in front of the other shuffling my feet along the dirt trail, not caring where my hands lead me. Lightly grazing my finger tips against the forest trees, causing their leaves to fall. Everything I touch, life gets sucked out of it. Leaves begin fall and lose color, flowers turn black and limp. I look up into the sky to see so much Life around me, oh how beautiful I saw Life to be, even if I am the cause for its end. The families of birds in the sky playing tag with one another. The deer in the soft grass lifting their heads up to look at me before galloping away. The last to leave was the fawn, who sat down to face me, tilting her head trying to figure out who I am. Staring at Death in the face before taking a few steps toward me, Poor fawn, so young and innocent, it's heart does not understand the reason why I was put on this Earth, but one day it will be the Fawn's time... I'll have to touch it. The fawn begins to run away, back to her family to continue living its pure, happy, and mortal life. I continue to walk knowing that my forbidden curse will forever keep Life and I apart, but no matter how far away from each other we are, we need one another. Life isn't complete without Death, and Death isn't complete without life.

Further down the trail I hear the bushes start to rustle. Thinking it was the wind I ignore it and continue to walk until I hear a voice. Her voice. I quickly turn around to see Life looking at me with her beautiful blue eyes. "I Thought I told you that you can't see me." I exclaimed, taking a few steps back. But this does not stop Life from continuing to walk over to me, without hesitation, with a smile on her face. "I love you, it is okay." She told me, over and over again. Step after step, breath after breath.

"Please leave, do not come close, please." I say, trying to persuade her not to come close, my eyes start to form tears that begin to stream down my face. All life does is repeat herself and continue to walk to me. "I love you, it is okay." With her repeating the words it was to much for me to take, my emotions weaken my knees as I fall onto them, hearing her voice get closer and closer until it is right over me. Looking up, I can see her reaching her hand out towards me. Then she says the words that will I will forever remember. Life leans in close and calmly says, "I accept you Death." Unable to move out of the way, I try to tell her to stop but it was to late, Life has already touched Death.

It has been a year since then and I still think about that day every moment I have. Life accepted me for who I was. She was not afraid of me even though everything I touch dies. I saw life disappear. The birds stopped chirping, The wind stopped moving. The only thing I could see now was a piece of myself everywhere.

I begin to walk against the dirt trail going up to the hill, where I failed to save her with my final goodbye. I place my jacket on the bench, move my hair out of my face and close my eyes.

Days and nights would go by where I would hear no noise, see no sign of Life. I changed my position to lay on my back, facing the sky as the sun begins to rise. Resting my eyes to replay my memories with her over and over again.

Chirp... Chirp...

I hear a bird chirping in the distance. "What the-" Shocked, I move my head in the direction of the chirp, still on my back.

Chirp... Chirp...

It grew louder and louder. I rest my eyes thinking it was a dream until I felt a bird landing on my chest. Opening my eyes I sees a morning dove on it, with its life full. It rests it's head on my chest and chirps. I hesitantly touch it. But Life continues to Chirp.
