At a secluded manor in Wiltshire, where elegance masks intention, a night of curated desire begins to unfold.
Stephen arrives not knowing that what he is about to experience will challenge not only his boundaries—but his understanding of himself.
Flames of Shadows is a novel of submission, memory, and awakening.
CHAPTER ONE: DESIRE IN RESTRAINT
Le Domaine d'Arielle stood in quiet opulence on the edge of Wiltshire — a manor reborn from its past as a private girls' school. The gravel drive, long and winding, was lined with rose-gold lanterns casting soft, honeyed light over the path. The air carried the faint scent of jasmine and damp earth, as though the ground itself held secrets it refused to yield.
Inside, the mansion unfolded in gilded marble and vaulted ceilings. Live strings whispered a modern rendition of Bach, the sound barely rising above the gentle chime of crystal glasses. Champagne pyramids glowed under flickering candlelight, while servers in pearl-white uniforms drifted like phantoms — silent and precise.
The night's theme — "Desire in Restraint" — was an inside joke to some, a revelation to others. Amanda's old school friend, Lady Octavia Morell, had curated the event with her usual grace and cruelty. The provocations were subtle: touches of leather in the floral arrangements, silk blindfolds tied artfully around champagne bottles — but no one openly acknowledged them. The game, after all, was in the suggestion.
Tristan Vermeer stood near the entrance, his linen suit throwing sharp contrast against the manor's dark panelling. A Dutch shipping heir and art collector, Tristan carried the air of a man who owned access — his gold cufflinks shaped like keys, a quiet symbol of his obsessions.
Lady Octavia, dressed in a deep plum gown, moved like intention wrapped in velvet. Her hair was sculpted into a perfect French twist, her every step measured and unreadable. With a glass of something clear — gin and lime, perhaps — she watched the room like a puppeteer with invisible strings.
He stood near the grand piano, a glass of Japanese whisky in his hand. Tall and lean, his dark suit tailored but understated, he appeared as both participant and observer. There was a tension in him — not nervousness, but something held in reserve. His name was Stephen, and his gaze wandered — detached, searching — until it landed on her.
Amanda did not arrive early, nor was she fashionably late. She arrived at the moment silence begged to be broken. In a backless white gown, she moved like certainty made flesh — graceful, spare, impossible to ignore. The fabric didn't cling; it obeyed. No jewellery adorned her except small gold piercings in each ear, catching light like whispered secrets. A single braid fell loose over her collarbone — something undone, an intimate rebellion against the rest of her control.
She offered only a glance — heavy with old alliances and betrayals. Her perfume, leathery with notes of iris and amber, wove through the air like an invitation no one dared accept. Men parted for her without being asked. Tonight, Amanda was not to be chased. She was to be noticed and left untouched.
Octavia spotted Stephen by the piano, his gaze locked on Amanda across the room. A flicker of amusement crossed her face — sharp, knowing. She drifted to his side, her voice a smooth whisper laced with intent.
'That woman you're failing to ignore? Her name's Amanda. She doesn't belong to anyone.'
Stephen said nothing — his eyes still fixed on Amanda, who stood in the lamplight like something carved from moonlight and grace.
Octavia stepped closer, placing a guiding hand between his shoulder blades.
'Come on,' she said, gently pressing forward.
Amanda turned as Octavia approached, Stephen in tow. The introduction felt incidental—-but the moment stretched.
'Amanda,' Octavia said with a teasing edge, 'this is Stephen. You've met before, I believe.'
Stephen's eyes flickered briefly to Octavia, then landed on Amanda — finally meeting her look with the intensity of a man who knew exactly how to remain unmoved in the face of her undeniable allure. The words left his lips, slow and deliberate, without a trace of pretension:
'Tell me — do you always arrive wrapped in hush, or did I earn that privilege tonight?'
Amanda's breath caught — not visibly, but deep within. It struck her like a tuning fork in the chest. She met his gaze fully, unblinking, her poise unbroken. And yet something inside her had shifted. Her body felt it before her mind did — a pull, a warning, a spark.
She smiled faintly, then excused herself — not out of retreat, but in strategy. The most powerful entrances, she knew, required a deliberate absence. As she stepped away, her gait steady but slower, she became aware of the warmth low in her belly. A quiet hum stirred within her, something ancient and unnamed.
Stephen watched her go, his stare unbroken. Octavia, ever the puppeteer, murmured, 'Intriguing, isn't she?'
But Stephen barely heard. At that moment, a guest brushed past, knocking Stephen's glass — just enough. He sighed as whisky splashed to the floor, a flicker of annoyance crossing his face, before it vanished. He didn\'t dwell on it.
'Wonderful,' he muttered, eyeing the small stain blooming on his jacket. 'I could have done without that.'
No one seemed to notice, or care.
Stephen's gaze returned to Amanda, framed by the open French doors—-the cool night air sharpening the contrast with the mansion's heat. She was looking out at the gardens, alone, unbothered by the bustle inside.
The distance between them felt deliberate — a challenge he was happy to accept.
Determined, he strode towards her.
'It's loud in there,' Stephen said, his voice quiet enough not to startle her.
Amanda didn't turn at first.
'You seemed glad for an excuse to escape,' she replied calmly, her voice carrying a note of amusement.
'I needed no excuse,' Stephen said, stepping closer to the threshold. 'Only a destination. I seem to have found exactly the kind of escape I needed.'
Something flickered in her — quiet, but unmistakable. She heard the pull beneath the poise.
And for the first time in a long while, she allowed herself to feel it.

They say power is presence. I disagree.
Tonight reminded me: true power is the ability to withdraw and still be remembered.
Stephen said something — simple, deliberate.
He asked if he'd earned my silence.
As if silence were a prize, not a shield.
I felt something shift. Not in him. In me.
A low, familiar hum I've trained myself to ignore.
But it's there now, and its mine to name.
Not tonight.
But soon
