A call to rest after hours of exertion

“Come on, Kraii! Training is over. Let's go.”

The voice cut through the heavy, humid air, sharp but warm, breaking the rhythm of heavy breathing and the soft thud of feet striking packed earth. Kraii didn’t stop moving at first; he kept his stance low, arms still raised, eyes fixed on the imaginary opponent he had been sparring against for the last three hours. Sweat dripped from his brow in steady streams, soaking the collar of his loose training tunic and leaving dark patches spreading across his back and chest. His legs trembled faintly, muscles burning with the kind of deep, satisfying ache that told him he had pushed himself harder than he ever had before.

“Kraii now,” the voice called again, this time closer, accompanied by the sound of footsteps crunching across the open practice ground.

Only then did Kraii let his arms fall slowly to his sides, his shoulders slumping as the tension he had held for so long finally released. He drew in a long, ragged breath, filling his lungs with air that tasted of dust, dry grass, and the faint scent of pine from the trees lining the edge of the clearing. When he turned, his mentor stood a few paces away, arms crossed, a faint, knowing smile playing at the corners of his mouth, one that spoke of pride as much as concern.

“You looked like you were ready to keep going until dawn,” the older man said, stepping forward to clap a firm hand on Kraii’s shoulder. “That drive will serve you well, but even the strongest warrior cannot fight on empty and exhausted. Your body needs time to mend, just as your mind needs rest to absorb what you’ve learned.”

Kraai nodded, wiping sweat from his eyes with the back of his forearm. His throat felt dry, and every movement felt heavier than it had that morning, yet there was a quiet fire burning inside him, a sense that every strike, every block, every moment of effort had brought him one step closer to where he wanted to be. “I felt like I was finally getting it right,” he said, his voice rough from exertion. “Like the moves weren’t just something I memorized, but something I could feel.”

“And that is exactly why we stop now,” his mentor replied, guiding him gently toward the path leading back to the barracks. “Leave the rest for tomorrow. If you push past your limit tonight, tomorrow you will be too sore to learn anything new. Discipline means knowing when to begin and when to end.”

As they walked away from the empty training grounds, the sun dipping low on the horizon painted the sky in shades of deep orange and violet, casting long shadows across the field. The sounds of the day began to fade, replaced by the chirp of crickets and the rustle of leaves in the cooling evening breeze. Kraii glanced back once, looking at the worn marks in the dirt where he had practiced, and felt a quiet sense of satisfaction settle over him. Training was done for today, but the journey was far from over.
