Eden

The Fourth River

By AmberPublished 3 months ago 3 min read

The earth groaned beneath the desert.

Dr. Lucien Vale paused at the edge of the excavation trench, listening.

The sound came again... A low vibration.

Not quite a rumble... Not quite a voice...

Something in between.

Around him, floodlights cast harsh white beams across the ancient ruins buried beneath centuries of sand. Workers moved nervously among the exposed stone structures, their conversations hushed despite the late hour.

No one wanted to be the first to admit they were afraid.

Vale understood.

He was afraid as well, though fear had never stopped him.

Fear had built empires, funded wars, and had convinced mankind to worship gods, raise monuments, and search for answers in places better left untouched.

And tonight, fear. had brought him here.

"Doctor."

Vale turned.

His lead archaeologist, Samuel Reed, was climbing out of the trench. Sweat streaked the dust across his face despite the cool desert air.

"You need to see this."

Vale followed him.

The chamber lay nearly thirty feet below the surface. No maps had recorded it, and no satellite imagery had detected it.

The structure should not have existed... yet there it was.

A perfectly preserved room carved from black stone unlike anything found in the surrounding region. The walls were covered in symbols.

Ancient. Older than Sumerian. Older than Akkadian...

Older than any written language humanity was supposed to possess.

Vale's pulse quickened.

The symbols were familiar...

Not because he had seen them before, but because he had dreamed them.

For months... The same patterns, the same shapes...

The same impossible geometry.

At the far end of the chamber stood a stone pedestal.

Something rested upon it...

A tablet. Not clay, nor stone, nor metal.

Its surface shimmered as if carved from dark glass.

Vale looked up.

"What happened?"

The man hesitated. "He quit."

"People quit excavations every day."

Samuel shook his head.

"No. He dropped his tools, started screaming, and ran into the desert."

Silence settled over the chamber.

Vale stepped closer to the pedestal.

The air felt strange...

Heavy... Charged...

As though the atmosphere itself had resisted his presence.

He reached toward the artifact.

The moment his fingers brushed its surface, pain exploded behind his eyes.

The chamber vanished, and darkness swallowed him.

Then came water. Endless water.

Four rivers flowed from a single source, brighter than liquid silver.

Their currents wound through a land untouched by death.

Mountains rose in the distance beneath a sky unlike any he had ever seen.

Colors existed there that had no names.

And standing beyond the rivers... A garden.

Vast and beautiful... Impossible.

A place every human soul somehow recognized.

Then he saw them... The guardians.

Towering figures stood at the boundary between worlds.

Their forms shifted constantly... Wings, eyes, and fire.

Faces that seemed human one moment and utterly foreign the next.

The sight of them filled him with terror so profound that his knees nearly gave way.

One of the beings turned. Its countless eyes fixed directly upon him.

Not through him. Upon him.

As if it knew he was watching.

As if it had always known.

The being raised a hand and flame erupted across the horizon.

A sword of living fire stretched from one end of the sky to the other.

A voice thundered through creation itself.

THE WAY REMAINS CLOSED.

Vale gasped! The vision shattered.

He stumbled backward, crashing onto the stone floor.

Workers rushed toward him, and someone shouted his name.

But Vale barely heard them.

His gaze remained fixed on the black tablet.

For the first time in his life, certainty replaced speculation.

The Garden of Eden was real.

It still existed!

And somewhere beyond the boundaries of the world, the Tree of Life waited.

Slowly, despite the fear clawing at his chest, a smile spread across his face.

At last... he had found the first clue.

And no power in Heaven or Earth would stop him from finding the rest.
