Seven year old Joseph has arrived at Gator Stadium with his mother Ariel for the city’s annual Easter egg hunt. Joseph is not as excited about the hunt as most children would be because he does not think that he will collect many eggs due to so many other children that will be running to get the eggs as well.

What’s wrong with my baby? Ariel asked Joseph. Mom I don’t think I’m gonna get a lot of eggs, Joseph replied in a low tone. Sure you will, Ariel began. I think you’re gonna be surprised at how many eggs you get today. Joseph was not convinced, but nevertheless he prepared himself for the hunt. He stood by the dugouts with nearly five dozen other children waiting for the starter bell to go off. Suddenly a man’s voice came on a loud speaker preparing the children for the hunt.

Alright boys and girls the Egga Megga hunt will begin in three…two…one…GO!!! The starting bell went off and all of the children took off running into the field collecting as many eggs as they could find. Joseph starting grabbing the eggs closest to his feet and threw them in the Walmart bag his mother Ariel had given him. Joseph suddenly started to feel a glimmer of joy in the pit of his stomach. He was having more fun than he anticipated and was even enjoying the company of the surround children who were also having fun. Once his bag was as full as it could get Joseph rushed back to the dugout to meet Ariel who welcomed him back with a smile.

That’s my baby, Ariel exclaimed. I knew you would get all the eggs. You were right mom, I did have a lot of fun, Joseph replied. As Ariel and Joseph started joyfully making their way to the exit they were abruptly stopped by two men in security guard outfits. Hello ma’am, one of the men began. Can you and your son accompany us to the security office? Um sure, Ariel replied. What’s this about? She asked in a confused tone. Uh we just need to ask you and your son a few questions, right this way please.

Ariel and Joseph followed the guards to the security officer. While Ariel was confused about what was going on, Joseph was in another world of glee happy about all the eggs he collected. Right this way, one of the guards instructed as they entered the office. Ariel and Joseph took a seat in two of the chairs in the office. So, one of the guards started. Sorry to bother you and your son, but you both have something we need and we want it back. Ariel and Joseph both looked at each other with a look of confusion. What? The pair asked simultaneously.

Our money, one of the guards exclaimed as they both pulled out guns from the smalls of their backs. Ariel grabbed ahold of Joseph in fright. What are you talking about? Ariel asked. Your kid’s eggs, one of the guards replied. There’s something in those eggs that belongs to us. But there’s nothing in these eggs but candy, Joseph started. As he opened one of the eggs up a roll of 100 dollar bills fell onto the floor, much to the shock of Joseph and Ariel. Oh my God! Ariel exclaimed. Dang it kid, one of the guards exhausted. You should’ve never cracked that egg, now there’s only one way to keep you quiet.

Without giving it a second thought, Joseph jumped out of his chair and stepped on the guards foot. The guard dropped his gun as he hopped around screaming in pain. The other guard charged toward Joseph, but was caught off guard by Ariel who rose from her chair, picked it up and hit the other guard with her chair in hand, knocking him to the floor. Ariel then grabbed Joseph and they took off running out of the office. Making their way back to the entrance point they caught the attention of two police officers who had been patrolling the event.

HELP!!! Ariel screamed. THEY HAVE GUNS!!!Joseph added. As the two men came charging out behind them, Joseph grabbed ahold of Ariel and the both fell to the ground. The two men raised their guns in their direction, but were stopped by gunshots from the onlooking police officers. One of the men was hit in the hip and the other was hit in the leg. They both fell to the ground dropping their guns as four police officers converged on the duo. Two of the police officers cuffed the men while the other two read them their rights.

Joseph rose to his feet and helped his mother up. The crowd behind them that had been scattering in chaos was now now surrounding the crime scene as the two suspects were being handcuffed and taken away. Are you two okay? One of the officers asked Ariel. Yes we’re fine, she replied. Who were those men? Ariel asked. Those were the Mahoney twins, the officer answered. They robbed a bank yesterday and decided to hide the money here where they worked because they knew they were being watched, but they weren’t too smart. They hid the money in a lot of the plastic eggs, not realizing that the eggs would be used today. Guess it was rotten egg luck that your son found most of them.

I’ll say, Joseph added with a slight grin. You two are free to go, the officer exclaimed. The department will be in touch. Ariel and Joseph walked away from the stadium and headed back to their car. Wow! Joseph said in amazement. Wow what? Ariel asked. That was so cool, Joseph answered with excitement. Well I’m glad our near death experience brought you so much joy, Ariel added sarcastically. I just hate you didn’t get any eggs. Oh but I did, Joseph added mischievously. He reached into his pocket and reveal four plastic eggs which were filled with 100 dollar bills. JOE! Ariel exclaimed in a loud shock. You actually took some of the money. Yeah, Joseph answered with glee. I wasn’t leaving empty handed. Well, Ariel started. They tried to kill us so I guess we earned it. The pair gave each other a hi-five as they drove off with their Easter egg lick.

Loved the story, and the surprise of the eggs! I think the mom missed a teaching lesson though - I would have returned the money… 🤔
