Once upon a time in the mystical land of Eldoria, there lived a fierce dragon named Ember and a burly orc named Grunk. Now, Ember wasn’t your typical hoarding, fire-breathing dragon. Sure, he had a penchant for shiny things, but his heart was as warm as his fiery breath. And Grunk, well, he wasn’t your typical brutish orc either. Despite his intimidating appearance, he had a soft spot for nature and a love for gardening.
One sunny morning, Ember was soaring through the skies, enjoying the thrill of the wind rushing through his scales, when he spotted a group of humans attacking a village near the forest. Without hesitation, he swooped down, sending the attackers fleeing with a mighty roar. Among the villagers, he noticed Grunk, standing tall and fearless, defending his home with nothing but a wooden club.
Impressed by Grunk’s bravery, Ember landed gracefully beside him. “Nice swing there, big guy,” Ember said with a grin, admiring Grunk’s courage.
Grunk blinked in surprise, his tusks jutting out as he stared at the dragon beside him. “Um, thanks?” he replied, unsure of what to make of the compliment.
Ember chuckled. “No problem! Say, mind if I stick around? I’m always up for making new friends, especially ones who aren’t afraid to stand up to bullies.”
Grunk scratched his head, considering the offer. Despite his initial wariness of dragons, Ember seemed different from the stories he’d heard. “Sure, why not?” he shrugged. “But no burning down the forest, okay?”
Ember laughed, shaking his head. “Nah, I’m more of a ‘roast marshmallows over a campfire’ kind of dragon,” he assured Grunk.
And so, an unlikely friendship blossomed between the dragon and the orc. Together, they patrolled the forest, keeping the peace and protecting the creatures within. Ember used his strength and fiery breath to fend off threats, while Grunk used his knowledge of the land to tend to the forest and its inhabitants.
As the seasons passed, word of their friendship spread far and wide. People from all corners of Eldoria came to witness the legendary duo in action, fighting side by side against any who dared to disturb the peace.
And so, whether it was battling rogue wizards or rescuing lost travelers, Ember and Grunk stood strong together, proving that even the unlikeliest of friends can make a difference in the world.

Of all the students Mr. Benedick expected to see in his office, he did not expect the boy who was sitting there. What grade was this one, he thought? He walked over to his desk, looked at the folder Ms. Diner had left out for him, and opened it. There was a photo inside of it, taken from last year’s picture day. Not much growth; not too different. The boy sitting in front of him had nothing strange or unusual in his file, if a child’s life defined by having “nothing disruptive or regretful” in it could be called fine. Mr. Benedick also realized that “life” was an anagram of “file,” and wondered where that thought came from as he stared at the boy in front of him. Benny Duncan. Grade Four. Beloved by all his teachers so far. He had seen the boy playing with the other boys his age in the school yard at recess. Four Square and foot hockey. A normal-looking kid. A normal kid… And here he was, after a very stupid moment with the fire alarm and a shoe.

Dog Thirteen
Dog Thirteen June 4, 2023 Today was different. To be fair, all days are different now that I am a new dog. Every day I seem to be able to do something new- open my eyes, stand up, hobble around, wag my tail. Every day I get stronger and more comfortable in this body. It’s not bad, being a dog. Not so far, at least. I never have to go hungry, although we are feeding from our mother less and less and trying new foods that come out of a bag and a can. It’s a mixture. I wish I could tell the humans that I prefer the food from the can. I try to show them by picking out the kibble pieces and spitting them onto the ground, but they just laugh and think I am being cute. That feels frustrating, to not be understood. But I cannot stay mad for too long because the humans pick me up and pet my head and body and it makes me feel happy inside, and now that I know how to wag my tail, I try to do that a lot.
