Dragon Age: Tales Forgotten

Dragon Age

Dragons are vast and seriously misunderstood creatures. Today, they are believed to be just folklore. Make believe. Who is to say that at some point, somewhere, in some era, Dragons really did or did not exist? My story goes beyond these skeptics and small thinkers. For my story has been a legend passed down from the generations of my forefathers and their fathers before them. At a time history seemed to have lost, or wanted forgotten, humans and dragons lived on the same rock. We breathed the same air. Drank from the same waters. Humans and dragons had their differences, but in this period of time lost, dragons were just another species finding the best way to live among all other beings in peace and harmony.

Don’t get ahead of yourself. Dragons aren’t just big, mean, fire breathers. In fact, they had voices of their own. As you hear me speak, imagine the deepening shudder of dragon voice. Or like whisps of light air, depending on the gender. Also, depending on the dragon’s birth, they were able to control and conjure any piece of element they were born to. Hatched in cold and harsh winters, this would breed the Ice Dragons. Brought into the world on hot, humid summer days bred Fire spitters. Then you have Water Dragons born to the seas. And Earth Dragons, born on top of mountains or hillsides. And so on. However, like in all generations, humans breed evil. And my story is nothing different. Let’s begin...

“SWOOSH”. “SWISH”. It was Kai’s turn to be on border patrol today. Kai was a Dragon. A monstrous, 32-foot Water Dragon. A tail that could chop trees in one go, wingspan half his size. And he was born to the sea of the West. His dark blue with hints of turquoise in his scales made him the most elegant of the West Sea Dragons. While on patrol, Kai was coming to the end of the Forest of Yin. Onward was Lake of Kine. And floating on top the water, was a little rowboat. The content within the boat was a babe. A boy not even 5 years of age. Kai, wings tucked to his side, took a nosedive straight towards the boat. “THUD”. “BOOM”. Kai knew in an instant that he was not prepared for what he was about to discover, as he landed with aggressive determination to retrieve the unknown of this boat.

‘What have we here? A young boy. Alone? For what has caused this?’, Kia asked in a puzzling way. A note would be uncovered as Kai took the baby in his giant-sized paw and lifted him. Kai ever so gently placed the abandoned babe onto the beach of the lake. At the same time, he retrieved the rolled-up parchment, (Kia, and most dragons, had the use of arms and opposable thumbs, that like a human. Kai also had a gift of retractable claws) and began to read:

“If you are reading this, you have found my son, Kane.

I am Lord Lorenthin, of the Midland Guardians.

Please take my son South. We have been overrun by Magic Killers.

Go South. Take the fork at the trees left and you will journey into

Lake Kine. From there you will reach the shores of the Dragons.

Find Master Agni Shvaasee. DO NOT give any reason for harm to come

to you. Hand this letter over and he will take care of everything.

Safe travels.”

‘As if by Fate, I have found you safe little one. Let us see what Master Agni Shvaasee knows of this.’

Scooping up baby Kane, Kai expands his wings and with one furious flap, he bolts up and forward, leaving behind a dust storm from the sand bed. As fast as he could dash, kai attempts to make haste

towards his clan, while keeping little Kane tucked into his chest surrounded by four sharp claws.

Dashing quickly, something caught the attention of Kai. A horrendous screech coming from above.

Kai looked up and in a moment’s notice, banked right. For a Fire Spitter was on him. Almost the same size, maybe more by a few feet, the Fire Drake closed in on the two passengers of wind. Chasing them, hacking up fireballs, and launching them in the direction of the blue dragon and the baby. Kai had seen this kind before. This dragon resembled those born in the North, kin to Master Agni. ‘Hang on little human. I will send this bastard back from whence he came.’ Kai was not afraid of his elemental opposite. He trained with Fire Master Agni for years. As he turned sharply, he headed straight back to Lake Kine. For the tail-gaiting Fire Drake had no idea what was to come. The Fire Spitter roared deeply, ‘Give me the little babe. Release him into my custody and no harm shall come to either of you!’ He would not give up so easily, nor would Kai.

Over the lake, Kai was now grazing the waters. Close enough, was the opposing dragon behind him. Kai, opening his free paw, released his claws. He dipped the middle, which would be his longest by two inches, into the lake, muttering some magic spell. He was slicing open the lake. Unbinding any hold, the waters had with each other. The Lake was now at the will of Kai. He continued to mumble his unknown gibberish of spells. The water started to form mini cyclones, about ten total. Kai lifted his water cutting finger from the Lake and gave a little flick. The waters became weaponizing. The cyclones started blasting bolts and darts of sharp water towards the enemy. The water acted as if it was a manned gun. The Fire Spitter did not realize until it was too late what was happening. Being shot by powerful water darts, and blasted by incredible force of water balls, the foe shouted, ‘YOU DARE COMMAND WATERS TO ATTACK YOUR ELEMENTAL OPPOSITE? FOR THIS YOU SHALL PERISH!’ He was growing weaker by each blast hitting him. Kai would not dare to slow his flight or gaze back even for a second. Again, muttering and with the flick of his long claw, the waters started bellowing. Shifting. Vapor was being created. Big thick clouds of fog were taking over. And soon, not even Kai could see where he was heading.

‘That must’ve done it, little one. I don’t know what he wanted with you, but you are safe for now.’ Kai had no idea what to do. He just kept flying, commanding the waters below to keep the thick fog coming to his aid. Kai did not want to leave the protection of the fog. And he did not want his foe opposite to track him to his Dragon Clan. Kai had no choice. He had to keep flying with the lake under him to be protected from any more threats from the sky or land.

It felt like hours. The bright light of the moon showered the fog. Kai was growing tired of flying. Kane was not bothered by anything that had transpired over the last day. He was, believe it or not, asleep. Not dead. But snoring. And Kai seemed fine with it. Kai muttered his spell, twirling his long claw. The fog was dying down. As if clinging onto the presence of Kai to make sure wherever his destination, he is safe. Yet, the fog disappeared altogether. And it was a starlit night. Kai knew that if an attack were to happen, he would have been dodging firebombs by now. He flew a little longer but happened across a mountain. And on this mountain side, was a big enough cave to fit two Kai’s inside. He landed. Almost losing his steps as he was to warn out from flapping to even bother to crawl. He managed himself and Kane inside the cave.

This is where Kane and Kai would find themselves. Because there was a war about to take place. A war unlike anything that has been fought in a century. I could go on and give some insight has to the events leading up to the War of Dragons. But I shall leave that for your imagination. After all, dragons are just fairytales right? So, why does it matter where this story ends?
